Pumpkin Waffle-Off

When autumn rolled around, I couldn’t resist buying the Pumpkin Pecan Waffle & Pancake mix at Williams-Sonoma.  (I’d link to it, but they’re not selling it anymore.  Sorry!)  It was a little pricey, so I decided to hold a Waffle-Off…I used the mix for one batch and a Williams-Sonoma recipe for the other batch.

The mix won.  The recipe was good, but the consistency didn’t come out right (see picture below, which looks nothing like the picture on their website). Ugh.  I really wanted the recipe to win, especially since I can’t even buy the mix now if I wanted to!  The recipe was good, but not great.  Perhaps I’ll try to perfect it…or maybe one of you has a good recipe!  Please share if you do (I think someone mentioned a Rachael Ray recipe in a comment?).

Regardless, pumpkin waffles are YUMMY. Oh, and Williams-Sonoma came up with yet another food item that I’m probably going to try to make myself…just like these pumpkin waffles…and just like the pumpkin butter.  That store keeps me busy, and poor, and eating overly-indulgent foods!  Uh-oh, I just noticed the peppermint bark is back…AND the hot chocolate.  Oh my.

We have been using this use this recipe from gourmet for pumpkin waffles for years. In fact they are the only waffles we ever make. I also use whole wheat flour in the recipe and it comes out fine.

  2. Jane,
I haven’t tried this recipe, but good luck if you do! http://grannymillerblog.blogspot.com/2008/10/pumpkin-butter.html

This blog is quite fascinating if you have a lot of time to explore it. There are some great hints about gardening and canning. I am wondering if you can substitute canned pumpkin instead of going through all the work of getting pumpkin from the actual pumpkin. Let me know if you do try it.

  3. With regards to peppermint bark, our Costco is carrying it in the bakery section…$10 for a large tub. Yummy!

I just got this off of a friend’s blog and I have to say I’m hooked. They are light and tasty. Accompanied with the orange walnut butter and nutmeg syrup – it’s so good it’s like dessert. I’m not sure where she got the recipe, but it is very worth trying.

Over the years my mom always made peppermint bark with crushed red or green starlight candies and melted almond bark. Super easy and really yummy. It makes a great gift for friends, too. I’m really anxious to try pumpkin waffles. I love this time of year!

A waffle-off is a fun idea. My mom used to do a “potato-off” with Idaho potatoes and Maine potatoes. What are some other good comparison ideas?

This is hands-down the best recipe – http://pumpkinwaffles.wordpress.com/ultimate-pumpkin-waffle-recipe/

Deliciously pumpkiny and full of spice! It’s based loosely on the Epicurious one mentioned in the first comment, but it’s been fine-tuned to perfection.
