My Whole Foods Conundrum

I don’t often shop at Whole Foods. Not because I don’t like the store, I do. The fact that it’s generally more expensive and further from my house are contributing factors to my low attendance. However, the real reason I have to avoid that place like the plague might be a bit surprising. Whenever I shop there, I end up buying tons of unhealthy food!  Hello, Ciao Bella Key Lime Graham Cracker gelato. Come to me amazing baked goods. Giant chocolate covered strawberries? I’m in heaven.

I made a quick trip to Whole Foods last night on a quest for soup. I found it, along with gelato and a white baguette. And these great little chocolate chip cookies made by Whole Foods, which are a new find from the packaged cookie aisle. I rarely buy cookies, I’m a homemade girl all the way. But, I’m telling you, these little guys are GOOD.  I think the fact they’re made with actual BUTTER might be the key.

Maybe one day I’ll learn how to find healthy stuff at Whole Foods…until then, anyone have a napkin? I think I have some crumbs on my face.

  1. … and the fact that the bakery always has free samples to scarf down doesn’t help :)

  2. My Whole Foods weakness is the bulk section…most recently yogurt covered raisins.

  3. Whole Foods will do a value tour for you, teaching you how to shop for the best values in the store. Most stores have their higher priced temptations; maybe Whole Food’s are just more tempting! :)

  4. a value tour sounds like a great idea! I’m gonna have to look into that…and yes, their higher priced temptations are FAR more tempting!

  6. I moved away to a city with NO Whole Foods. I’m surprisingly not missing it, but there is that occasional moment where I miss the “special little things”.

  10. Ooh, I’ll join you. I mostly go for produce and meat, and get what’s on special – 99cent/lb local apples. I find the 365 brand is really reasonable…milk and crackers. Although last time I got sucked into buying peanut butter sandwhich cookies, which taste just like girl scout cookies. Would love to join you on a value tour.

  11. Everytime I’m in whole foods, I go right for the divine chocolate-I just can’t help myself. You’re not alone!

  12. At our house we call Whole Foods…Whole Paycheck. And like you I live too far away to be a regular WF shopper. When I do go I to tend to go for the unhealthy stuff. I love the oatmeal raisin cookies in the bakery! YUM! Also when we go, since it’s is an hour and a half from my house, we often will grab lunch there from the buffet/salad bar. I eat way more then I should!

  14. they just did a profile of the CEO in the new yorker and he was saying the same thing — about how they have a lot of unhealthy stuff — i guess he wants to change that

  15. I love Whole Foods for a variety of reasons….but mostly for their bulk section, produce and whole body section. I would love to do all of my shopping there….but unfortunately, I cannot afford to.
HOWEVER, I have found that if I pay careful attention to their weekly circulars, I can get some things at Whole Foods at a better price than at the other stores. (Cereal bars, local in-season produce!)
It seems that in order to get good deals and good food, (I look for local as much as possible), I end up shopping at 3-4 different venues every week!
