Lovin’ My Magnetic Knife Holder

I’m loving my latest kitchen space saver discovery, which has actually been sitting in my drawer for over 10 years…until now. When Nate and I got married, his grandparents gave us a magnetic knife holder. For a while we didn’t have knives that needed holding, and then once I had knives, I used a drawer. Now that we’re in a kitchen with no drawers, the magnetic knife holder is a necessity. And you know what? I should have hung it up years ago – I love it!

My knives are super handy and accessible now, I can see exactly which knife I am choosing, and they are safely out of the reach of my children. If you have a LOT of knives or a block set, then you may not need this.  But, even then, this holder is a nice space saver and keeps your most frequently used knives at your fingertips.

    I just spent $500+ on a really nice set of knives. The salesman told us that you should never store knives in a drawer. It is better for them to be on a magnetic stip or in a block. So, good job taking good care of your knives! It’s the best thing for them!

  4. I have one of these and I love it! We have two tiny counters on either side of my sink which are occupied by the microwave and the coffee maker and the block wasn’t working out so well. I got mine for only $8 or $9 dollars at Ikea.

  5. We just recently put that exact one up on our wall above the kitchen stove & it is by far the most efficient item in my kitchen! For years I stored my knives in a block. But when little ones quickly became bigger ones that could reach the knife block without much effort, a problem had to be solved. And the magnetic strip was the answer. And bonus, I got even that much more counter space back!

  6. have to be honest, but sorta makes me nervous to have the knives exposed/hanging out w/kiddos in the house. yikes? What are your thoughts? Am i being over-cautious?

    I suppose if they really wanted to get at them they could…but honestly I feel like they are more out of reach now than they were…especially if they go on a wall above the stove or something. I think it’s all about placement! 🙂

    I also got rid of my block when I had little ones. I got a “block” (wooden slotted insert) for my drawer and put a lock on the drawer. That worked well, but I like how cool that magnet looks!

    My mom had one of these while I was growing up and it was really nice. I keep mine in a drawer right now, but they rub up against each other, which I’ve heard dulls them.

    I love these. I’ve had them for a few years now, since I saw one of those science related cooking shows that talked about the bacteria that grows in knife blocks. Yeah, that’s not a pretty picture lol.

    I work for a great housewares store, which just feeds my love of all things kitchen 🙂 A couple of tips to add to the ones that are here:

    *putting knives in any sort of storage where the knife rests on the sharp part of the blade contributes to dulling of the blade. This includes most blocks. If you really want a block, look for one that has the blades resting on the flat part. In other words, a block that has the slots horizontally rather than vertically.

    *most kitchens really only need 3 good knives, and quality really does count! Most kitchens need a paring knife, a chef’s knife (santoku does well here too), and a serrated knife for breads. You may want multiples of these, but most kitchens don’t need all the knives that come in the blocks. A good pair of kitchen shears is a must for me too. We tell people this in our store, even though we sell some very expensive block sets. I have a few paring knives and two larger knives and I cook a lot… and it’s plenty.

    *good knives need to be hand washed, not placed in the dishwasher.

  17. AWESOMe comment, bethanie. I actually have been meaning to write a knife post….and I’m going to one of these days. I agree – my holder is showing an extra knife that I just got for free, but before I had that one I had a paring, chef’s and larger serrated – as per the recommendation of the knife seller. it’s been great!

    anyway, love all your tips – they are fab!
