Remember my riddle from Sunday? I told you that this picture…

…pretty much spelled out an upcoming “secret” post for this week. No one figured it out until 10 minutes before I hit publish on this post. Go Andrea! Anybody else got it? Come on, the answer is right there all over Cate’s lips…

…and that answer is…Sprinkles!
I ate my first Sprinkles cupcake last week. And it was mighty tasty. I took my girls after school one day as a special treat. They of course were in heaven. And, I have to admit, I was pretty happy too.

I’ve been resisting going to Sprinkles. The whole concept of paying $3 for a cupcake seemed kind of extravagant to me…and whenever something is so trendy, I tend to assume it’s been over-hyped. After having gone to Sprinkles, I will say this…their cupcakes are very good. They taste homemade, which is the highest compliment I can think to give a non-homemade cupcake. I’m not turning cartwheels or anything…I mean, it’s a cupcake. But I will definitely go back for the occasional “special treat.”

The shop is very cute and it was so exciting for my little ones to stare at row upon row of cupcakes…and then get to pick one of their very own. And then dig in and make a huge mess and eat all the frosting without one peep from Mom.
We tried a variety of flavors. Cate had double chocolate. Anna had vanilla. I had Red Velvet and Chocolate Coconut (no, I didn’t eat two…I split them with Nate…I swear!) I actually really liked each flavor a lot…but Chocolate Coconut was my fave!

Darnit. Now I need a cupcake.

Hello! My name is Jane Maynard and you've landed yourself on my blog, This Week for Dinner™. Every Sunday I share a weekly menu...and then count on you to share your own! You'll also find other deliciousness that I hope you'll enjoy!

I was never a big cupcake fan, and I rarely made them because they never seemed to turn out right and were too time consuming for me. But I do love Sprinkles! My favorite is their black & white. I love how their cake part (especially the chocolate) doesn’t have that weird “cake mix” after taste. Do you know what I’m talking about, or is it just me? I tried a cupcake from another specialty cupcake bakery and theirs had that after taste, yuck.
Dang, now you have me craving Sprinkles!

I agree – the cake was REALLY good. I liked the cake better than the frosting, in fact!

Oh I’ve been wanting to try Sprinkles for so long! I just never make it to Palo Alto
Hopefully, the SF location will open up soon…?

They sent a dozen over here for us to try, and the plain coconut was actually my favorite, sooo moist and flavorful. I know it’s weird, but the higher end chocolate cakes, even the mocha one, was way too chocolately for me. Red velvet seems to be the most popular right now.

Oooo, I LOVE cupcakes! If I was there I would run right out to try it. Then again, if I was there I would probably have beat you to it…and then gone again with you! I’m always wary of those trendy types of places but some of them are delicious and get me with the unique flavor combinations that I would never get around to at home–although I have tried a few humdingers on my own. VERY envious!

Sprinkles Cupcakes are VERY good, but I prefer Kara’s Cupcakes. They have 2 locations that I know of, one in San Francisco by Ghirardelli Square and one in Palo Alto in the little shopping mall right across from Stanford. Their lemon cupcakes are just sooooooo good. I got one today and we got a free (with 10 dollar purchase) reusable tote bag for Earth Day!

i just have to say…you take really great photos of food. it’s really, really hard to do, and I’m a bit jealous over here.
but maybe it’s also the longing for the actual cupcake that’s makin’ me jealous

The beauty of Sprinkles for me is that they have gluten-free red velvet (and also offer a vegan version) — so, as a wheat-allergic mom, I can actually enjoy a cupcake out with my kids! Kara’s also offers gluten-free, but it was so horrible that I threw it away — which is really saying something after paying north of $3 for a cupcake. Yuck. (My kids don’t care for the regular Kara’s either, actually.) So as far as almost-homemade and something-for-everyone goes, I think Sprinkles is a big WIN and am glad it’s here! Glad you liked it too.
