Best Baked Beans

The recipe I’m about to give you is dangerously delicious. If you like baked beans, you’ll LOVE these. I made them for the 4th of July and they were a hit, even with my most-of-the-time-vegetarian friend. Thanks to my mom’s sisters who introduced me to this baked beans recipe to begin with. I have no idea where they originally got it from, perhaps I should do some digging. Wait. I’m rambling. Enjoy the beans!

Baked Beans
- 1 large can baked beans (3 lb 5 oz)
- 2 T worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 C brown sugar
- 1 C ketchup
- 1/2 tsp dry mustard
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- 1/2 lb bacon, chopped
- 2 rings pineapple (or one small can pineapple chunks, broken apart with your fingers)

Sauté the onion and green pepper over medium heat until starting to get soft. Add the bacon and sauté until bacon is cooked through. Drain grease.

While the onion and pepper are doing their thing, mix together the beans, worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard and pineapple. When the sautéd stuff is done, add it to the bean mixture. Bake in a 300-degree oven or in a crockpot on high for 2-3 hours. (I got a late start when I made these, so I baked at 350 for about 1 hour and they came out fine.)

  1. Yum! I wonder how they would be with some jalapenos added? I love to add spice to things that are sweet and salty. Maybe I’ll try…

  2. those sound yummy what do you think i could use for a sub on the bacon? i’m vegetarian but would love to make these for picnics and to eat over a day or 2 with meals!

  3. danielle – I think spicy would be GREAT in these! go for it!

butterfly…hmmmm…vegetarian option? maybe just leave the bacon out completely, the beans would still be super yummy. but I do like the saltiness that the bacon adds. I’m sure there is “fake” bacon out there, might be worth a try…but I probably would just leave the bacon out, or maybe even try adding a second kind of bean? just thinking out loud… :)

  4. That’s pretty close to my recipe and everyone loves them! I love how they smell when they bake in the oven. Last year I took them to our church Memorial Day picnic and a lovely older British lady (born and raised in England and then raised her family in Zimbabwe when her husband was transferred there with the RAF–Joan Breakwell) touched my arm and said, “Sister Violette, your beans are divine.” (That must be read in a beautifully soft English accent for full effect.) My kids love to say that whenever they suspect I am making them.

  5. I, too, would like to see a vegetarian version of these beans. They look so sweet and savory–absolutely delicious! Hoping to see the veggie re-write soon :)

  6. My beans are quite similar, but we partially drain the baked beans and replace it with a favorite bbq sauce. (I like the bullseye draft guinness sauce.) It really puts them over the top.

  7. reading this I said my christmas eve beans!
I used to bake beans for our christmas eve buffet but would rather bake cookies so the last three years I’ve thrown these in the crockpot at lunch time and kept baking cookies!

  8. This recipe does sound dangerously delicious! I can’t wait to share this with my book club, I’m sure they’ll simply adore it! Couple these baked beans with my world famous potato salad and I’m sure the next potluck dinner I attend will be a hit! Thanks!
