Pat and Herm chose Bainbrook Grey for the counters and decided to also go with a Wilsonart HD sink. The size and shape of their counters limited them a bit and installation was a little tricky, but they were able to figure it out! Due to the constraints, however, they were unable to get the rounded edges, which was kind of a bummer. BUT…the final product is still beautiful! The sink is integrated into the counter, which not only looks nice but is functional, too. The counters are also very resilient to staining, scratching and chipping. Wilsonart HD’s laminate counters really are a great option for when you don’t have a huge budget but want a high-quality, nice looking countertop. Click here to read more about their products. I can’t wait to get out to New Hampshire to see these counters myself!

P.S. Didn’t Pat and Herm choose the cutest backsplash? Love it! (That was separate from Wilsonart and I think they did a great job!)

The last picture is my favorite one – Pat’s kitchen on Thanksgiving. It makes me so happy that she has a nice counter and sink to use!

Wilsonart HD paid for most of the supplies and installation. All opinions are our own.

Time for a Kitchen Counter Makeover!

I know I always brag about how awesome my mother-in-law Pat is and you’re probably sick of hearing it, but she really truly is amazing. I seriously would have no problem living with her. That’s saying something, right?

Wilsonart HD was one of our SocialLuxe Lounge sponsors last year. They were great to work with and it was fun learning about their product. Because I was a VIP (in other words, I worked my tail off throwing that shindig), I had the chance to get some new kitchen countertops. Happily I was able to give the counters as a gift to Pat. Because she needs them. Because these were the counters she had forever:

She even had the edges of the counter taped down in one spot. Pat is in the kitchen a lot, so she deserves to have nice, high-tech counters to work on!

The counters were just installed, but we’re not quite ready to share the ‘after’ pictures. Once the backsplash is done we’ll have the big reveal, along with the reasons Wilsonart HD is a great option when you’re on a budget. Stay tuned!

House Stuff: Meet My Camo Counters and My Non-Camo Carpets

We bought our house from an elderly woman who lived here for years and years. We are really lucky because she loved her home and spared no expense when making updates. There are a few things we could do if we really cared, but, honestly, the house is completely move-in ready and comfortable the way it is.

The first thing we did, though, was take out the acoustic (a.k.a. popcorn) ceilings. Our new house is actually 45 years old, so, you know, it’s got some 45-year-old features. We had the ceilings done before we moved in since it’s pretty messy. For the most part it was an easy process and not too expensive, although we have to keep calling the ceiling guy back to fix bubbling spots he missed. I pray I never have to do any real construction because, holy smokes, there is always something with those guys! We hardly did any work and still…I can’t even imagine doing a big project!

Anyway, back to the woman who owned our house. She remodeled the kitchen about 10 years ago and, while I may have picked different colors, she did a really nice job and everything is very neutral and high quality. The kitchen is great and I have been reeeeeeallllly happy using it! We have some appliance updating to do (more on that in future blog posts!), but other than that, I am loving the kitchen.

I do need to take a moment, however, to introduce you to my granite countertops.

    camouflage granite countertops | thisweekfordinner.com

My new counters have a very special talent: camouflage. I’m not exaggerating when I say you absolutely cannot see ANYTHING on the counter surface. No matter what color the debris or crumbs, light or dark, it all just blends in. Even when you look closely. It’s almost magical.

The jury is still out on whether or not camo counters are a good thing. On the plus-side, they always look clean no matter what is going on. Big bonus! On the minus-side, they always look clean no matter what is going on. I mean, I could live in absolute squalor and never know it. (Well, unless I touched them!) Does anyone else have camo counters? Should I be grateful for them or curse their existence? I can’t decide!

Regardless of the camouflage abilities, I am just so happy the counters are not tile. Tile counters NEVER look clean and the last 6 months with tile was just one constant battle with crumbs. I will never voluntarily get tile counters. EVER.

My mother-in-law is getting Wilsonart HD counters installed at her home very soon. I’ll definitely report back on how those turn out and how we all like them! They are definitely more affordable than something like granite, and they have a lot of great features.

    Now I need to introduce you to my carpets. While my counters may camouflage everything on their surface, our carpets most decidedly do not have this ability. The previous owner obviously spent a lot of money on the carpet because it’s really high quality. But it is also white. SO EXCITED. White carpets are going to be AWESOME with three kids! Especially in the area where the kitchen table goes. WOOHOO! {Insert sarcastic emoticon.}

Eventually we want to put some hardwood floors in the living room, dining area and hallway. If anyone has advice or products they liked for putting in hard floors, please share!

Last year for SocialLuxe Lounge, Bissell was one of our platinum sponsors, sharing the Spot Bot deep cleaner with the bloggers at the party. I received a Spot Bot for free, which I was super excited about. But then we didn’t really live in places where I could use it. Until now! Hello, white carpets! Meet the Spot Bot!

For real, I love this thing. It’s super easy to use and it does a great job getting the spots and stains out of the carpet. Once I got started, I became a stain-fighting fanatic. I had to stop myself from doing the whole house so I could get other tasks done!

I need to go get cooking in my new kitchen! We are doing a small housewarming-and-happy-birthday-Nate party tonight – our first party in the new house! Wish me luck!

The 2012 Slow Churned SocialLuxe Lounge!

Wow. I can’t believe it’s been three weeks since the Slow Churned SocialLuxe Lounge in New York City. Time flies when you’re finally able to relax and catch your breath after months and months of craziness!

    The Par-TAY

For those of you who don’t know what SocialLuxe Lounge is, it’s this crazy idea my friend Allison concocted in 2009. She decided that we should throw a party for bloggers. We were like, “Sure, why not? How hard could it be? Allison would never lead us astray!” Well…it was hard. But it was worth it. And Allison certainly did not lead us astray. In fact, while the parties we’ve held each year have been amazing, the best part of it all has been the relationships I’ve developed with Allison and Marie, my SocialLuxe business partners. I am blessed beyond measure having these two ladies in my life. Working with them on something so hard/fun/time-consuming/awesomesauce has created a bond that will NEVER BE BROKEN! Yes, I’m getting all cheesy and melodramatic on you. I can’t help myself!

    Marie, Allison and I

Okay, enough blithering, onto the party!

This year our title sponsor was Edy’s/Dreyer’s Slow Churned ice cream. They were our dream sponsor and we were delighted to work with them. First of all, I totally buy their Slow Churned ice cream all the time. For real. Secondly, they were helping to raise money for Operation Smile. All summer they’ve been encouraging people give a smile and change a life! Each time someone uploads a smiley picture enjoying Slow Churned to the Edy’s or Dreyer’s Facebook pages, $5 is donated to Operation Smile. Our party was the official New York City stop on the Reason to Smile tour and we were able to get lots of photos of lots of smiley faces! You can upload your own photos (and get a free scoop of ice cream!) by clicking here!

Vanessa Lachey joined Edy’s/Dreyer’s to help put smiles on our party guests’ faces. She was DARLING. Seriously, so sweet and nice and maybe the cutest pregnant person ever. She came all the way from L.A. even though she was 8 months pregnant. Go Vanessa! She said that ice cream and helping kids was a no brainer!

350 wonderful, amazing, talented women bloggers came to the party to eat ice cream, get primped and pampered and have some fun. Each time we do this shindig there is a moment when I look out at the packed room and just feel happy. It is seriously FUN.

Between great music, the BlogLuxe Smile Awardsamazing and hardworking volunteerscute waiters, fun gift bags, celebrities, delicious foodfancy drinks, massages, gorgeous flowers, make-up, paparazzi, henna, the red carpet, and fabulous bloggers, it was a night to remember!

In addition to Edy’s/Dreyer’s, we had other great sponsors at the party as well. I need to give them a shout out because the party would not be possible without them and they were all fabulous!

Jill Zarin, of Real Housewives of New York fame and as spunky and fun as you would imagine, was there with BISSELL to show off the new Spot Bot. I am one of the lucky few who will be receiving a Spot Bot of my very own and I can’t WAIT to get my hands on that thing! Seriously, we have a spot in the girls’ room that needs some serious love right now. Hurry, Spot Bot. I need you!

Spot Bot on the Go; Real Housewife meets a Pioneer Woman!

Summer Baltzer, of Design on a Dime fame and gracious and lovely, was at the party with Wilsonart HD. They have these totally cool laminate countertops that are beautiful, super resilient and affordable. I wish I had a kitchen of my own right now to fill with these counters!

UNREAL Candy was also at the event and everyone was super excited about their unjunked treats. Let’s not talk about how many peanut butter cups were ingested by one Jane Maynard in a 24-hour time period.

Ubisoft was there to help our guests get their dance on with Just Dance. And Netflix did some giveaways with a fun Twitter quiz. Lots of fun to be had!

And, one of the best parts for me was having my sister Anne, sister-in-law Cora and brother Christian there to help out. It was awesome having them there and I got to fulfill all of their biggest dreams…Anne met Jill Zarin, Cora met Ree Drummond and Christian met Vanessa Lachey. They all went home happy. 😉

If you’re dying to get a gander at more photos of the event (I know you are, I can see it in your eyes), visit our Flickr page!

    Three cheers for SocialLuxe! {And now I’m going to take a nap. Phew!}
