    Week 318 Menu

We are on our way home today. I just wanted to thank you all for your kind comments and emails regarding my grandfather. It was very sweet and much appreciated. We had a wonderful week together as a family, despite the sad circumstances of our gathering. I feel very grateful for the time we had together.

Le Creuset has a new color called Quince, which you can get at Williams-Sonoma. I am participating in a photo contest with other food bloggers to help show off this pretty new yellow. The blogger who gets the most “Likes” on her photo gets to give away a bunch of Quince goodies. Because of this week’s unexpected travel, I forgot to beg you for votes and I’m pretty sure I’m in last place. If you want to make my photo feel more popular, visit this Pinterest page and “Like” it. Thank you!

Back to the regular routine for us this week.

    MONDAY:
    - Sweet Potato and Black Bean Burritos
    - Chips and guac

    TUESDAY:
    - Chili

    WEDNESDAY:

    Week 317 Menu

On Wednesday this past week my grandfather passed away unexpectedly. He was 91-years old and was a happy man to the end. We are sad but he didn’t suffer and lived a long life. You know, I don’t think I’ll ever get used to this death thing. It’s just so strange. And unexpected deaths, well, I don’t like missing the chance to say goodbye. I just hope Grandpa Wallin has been hearing my thoughts all week, as I ponder his life and think about what I would have said to him one last time if I’d had the chance.

I am grateful to my grandfather and my grandmother (who died in 1995) for having the courage to move to the United States all those years ago, setting into motion the events that lead to me sitting here today.

We are staying with family all this week, so no menu for me. My meal plan is to enjoy lots of meals with people I love!

Please still post your menus for the week so you can inspire one another! And, your homework this week (well, besides planning a menu!)…pick up the phone and call a loved one you haven’t talked to in a while.

    Have a great week, everyone!

    Week 316 Menu

One fun thing about moving back to a place is having access once again to food that you once bid adieu. Yesterday we were treated with two of our San Diego favorites. First, our friend Nikki brought us her 2012 box of Christmas goodies, which she had stored in the freezer. Nikki makes the best holiday treats of anyone anywhere, no doubt, so I was very happy when she knocked on my door with a cute red and white box in hand! Second, we had dinner at Phil’s BBQ. Oh, Phil, how we’ve missed you!

A couple repeats from last week, not because I was a slacker (amazingly!) but because of unexpected dinners with friends. That’s the best reason!

    MONDAY:
    - Steak and roasted fingerling potatoes
    - Green beans

    TUESDAY:
    - Chicken Tortilla Salad
    - Chips and Guac

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Easiest Ever Chicken Pot Pie

    THURSDAY:
    - Homemade hamburgers
    - Fruit

    FRIDAY:
    - Leftovers

    SATURDAY:
    - Takeout

    SUNDAY:
    - Kitchen Sink Quesadillas

Your turn! Show us what you got! Share those weekly menus! (Don’t forget…it’s never too late in the week to share, and we do not care if your menu is fancy or not!)

  6. Sunday, February 3

    Week 315 Menu

It’s Super Bowl Sunday! I don’t know about your countertop, but mine is stocked and ready to help me make some football-watching fare, including 7-Layer Dip and the decidedly devilish Sweet Chex Mix. Yum! And…Go Niners!

It was SO GREAT to get back into a routine of making dinner this past week. Let’s see if I can keep up the momentum!

    MONDAY:
    - Chicken Masala and rice (using Trader Joe’s simmer sauce, no recipe)
    - Roasted carrots

    TUESDAY:
    - Sweet Potato and Black Bean Burritos (new recipe I’m trying)

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Lasagna-Style Baked Ziti (another new recipe)
    - Salad and garlic bread

    THURSDAY:
    - Leftovers

    FRIDAY:
    - Take out

    SATURDAY:
    - Homemade hamburgers

    SUNDAY:
    - Steak of some kind (the girls have been requesting this regularly for a week!)
    - Roasted fingerling potatoes and another veggie (like green beans or broccoli)

You know the drill! Please share your menu for the week with us! Remember, plain or fancy, we love them all! Also, it’s okay to post later in the week, it’s never too late! Have a great week, everyone!

Week 314 Menu…and Using Beautiful Things

Hello! I think I just might be ready to get back in the groove! Our house is still a mess of paper, boxes and piles, but we’re getting there!

This morning I discovered that the dishwasher is basically useless. {Insert sarcastic ”Yay!”} Cate and I rewashed and dried everything and had a nice time together. I don’t know if or when the dishwasher issue will be resolved, so I think we have a lot of dishwashing in our future.

I am a firm believer in using beautiful things. For example, the cutting board that I bought at the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Part of me wants to set it aside, put it on display, never let a knife hit its surface. But it is a cutting board, you’re supposed to cut on it! And because it is so beautiful, that elevates the everyday, mundane task of cutting things up. Even daily tasks can be beautiful and inspiring when looked at in the right light.

I have been hiding away a stack of embroidered dishtowels that my grandma gave us when we got married. Embroidered dishtowels were her standard wedding gift and heaven only knows how many towels she embroidered over the years. This morning when I discovered we would be washing a lot of dishes, I decided to take these special towels out of the linen drawer. I took photos of each towel in their white, pristine state. And then I officially put them into the regular dishtowel rotation. I’m going to enjoy the towels, look at them everyday instead of once every few years when I reorganize the linens. I’m going to think of my grandma every time we use the towels. And I’m going to create memories with my children. These towels will become a part of my children’s history, just as the towels my own mother received on her wedding day are a part of my history and memories of childhood. These cute, embroidered duckies will forever remind my kids of hours spent washing, drying, talking and getting to know one another better over the kitchen sink.

And now, a real menu for the Maynard family!

    SUNDAY (today):
    - Steak
    - Roasted fingerling potatoes and zucchini

    MONDAY:
    - Chicken, zucchini and corn enchiladas
    - Guacamole and chips

    TUESDAY:
    - Chicken Masala (using TJ’s simmer sauce)
    - Rice and a veggie

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Leftovers

    THURSDAY:
    - Homemade hamburgers

    FRIDAY:
    - Takeout

    SATURDAY:
    - Breakfast for dinner (probably waffles)
    - Fruit

    SUNDAY:
    - Chicken Noodle Soup
    - Homemade bread

Thank you all who have so stalwartly posted weekly menus over the last month of crazy in my life. I am so grateful for your inspiration every week! Looking forward to seeing what you have planned for this week! And remember to bring beauty into your everyday!

    Week 312 Menu…Moving Week!

Good morning! We’re having wheat toast for breakfast, and everyone is pleased. Love it when the simplest thing works.

Well, it’s moving week, alone with the kids (Nate’s already working in San Diego). We’re going to have movers (woohoo!!!!!!!!!!), but I’m still feeling a little intimidated by the week. Think lots of happy thoughts for us!

    MONDAY:
    - Spaghetti

    TUESDAY:
    - Chicken cordon bleu (it’s in the freezer)
    - Rice

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Lulu’s (Lulu is our neighbor, she’s bringing us dinner that night. We love Lulu and her food!)

    THURSDAY:
    - Packing day…who knows?

    FRIDAY:
    - Jeffrey’s Hamburgers (the kids love this place, it’s our last Jeffrey’s hurrah!)

    SATURDAY:
    - We might be on the road, we might not. Who knows what we’ll be eating!

    SUNDAY:
    - Arriving in San Diego! Again, haven’t the foggiest idea what we’ll be eating for dinner! ;)

It was awesome to have so many more menus last week. I love January! Keep it coming my menu-planning friends! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got on the plan for this week. For those of you who will actually be cooking, I must admit, I’ll be feeling a little jealous of you. I can’t wait until our life calms back down a bit!

    Week 311 Menu

Happy New Year!!! I hope you all had a great week! We took a little trip down to San Diego and had a lovely time. I forgot just how amazing the weather is down there. Wow. We are lucky we get to move back!

With a week of family visiting, celebrations and travel, we have eaten out a TON and are sick to death of restaurant food. I am definitely getting back into the kitchen this week, despite the disastrous state of our home and all the organizing and packing that needs to happen in the next two weeks.

    MONDAY:
    - Spaghetti
    - Salad

    TUESDAY:
    - Homemade cheese pizza

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Grammy’s orange chicken
    - Rice and veggie

    THURSDAY:
    - Leftovers

    FRIDAY:
    - Waffles and fruit

    SATURDAY:
    - Take out

    SUNDAY:
    - Chicken Stir Fry
    - Dumplings

It’s the new year and I’m hoping some of you have added meal planning to your list of resolutions! Here’s a little plug if you haven’t. Meal planning is a GREAT resolution – easy to track, easy to do, and makes life so much better! You should totally do it! :) Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, back to business. It’s your turn to share your menu for the week! Can’t wait to see what you are all eating!

    Week 310 Menu

I know this is a food blog and you’re here for food, but Owen was eating his yogurt this morning (he insists on doing it himself these days), and, well, the camera couldn’t resist taking a few shots. When he pulls the yogurt cup close to peer inside to see if there is more yogurt? Makes-a-mom’s-heart-melt material indeed.

I seriously, honestly have no menu this week! We still have grandparents in town and, on Tuesday, we are driving to San Diego to show the kids where they will be living and to take Nate to his new job! (The kids and I are moving down in a couple of weeks.) It’s going to be another week full of fun, fun, fun!

    MONDAY:
    - New Year’s Eve with the grandmas (Dad and grandpas are heading to the Rose Bowl. Go Stanford!) – Snacky food is the plan for that night!

    TUESDAY:
    - On the road!

    WEDNESDAY – FRIDAY:
    - In San Diego…my mom will be with us, which means we’ll need to have at least one meal at Daphne’s. Hello, yummy Greek takeout.

    SATURDAY:
    - On the road!

    SUNDAY:
    - Make dinner with food in the freezer…I need to start using it all up before we move!

Your turn, bring on the menus! For those of you menu-planning stalwarts who have been posting faithfully through these holiday weeks, THANK YOU! Keep it coming! Next week I imagine we’ll all be back in the swing of things!
