    Week 188 Menu

This peach jam is taunting me this morning. Begging to be eaten. But I can’t. It’s not ready. Word of advice: when you make jam that needs to sit for 24 hours before eating, make it in the MORNING so that the next morning you can actually eat it…in the MORNING. Mmmmm….doesn’t it look good? It’s got to be ready, right? Walk away, Jane. Just walk away.

I’m going to do a little post tomorrow about jam. Make sure to check in. Until then…let’s plan a menu, shall we?

    MONDAY:
    - Spaghetti

    TUESDAY:
    - Red beans and rice (I KNOW. It’s been on the menu for 3 weeks. I haven’t been to a normal grocery store in those 3 weeks to get the ingredients I need…but I WILL be making it this week!)
    - Cornbread (so many of you planned cornbread type foods last week, now I’m craving it)

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Homemade pizza (this is what Cate requests every week!)

    THURSDAY:
    - Leftovers

    FRIDAY:
    - Eat out

    SATURDAY:
    - I feel like grilling hot dogs and hamburgers…it is Labor Day weekend, seems like a fitting end to the summer
    - Corn on the cob and baked beans

    SUNDAY:
    - Tacos

Bring it on! Show us what your menu’s got!

  2. Sunday, August 15

    Week 186 Menu

Good morning! Here, have a fresh blueberry muffin.

It’s looking like all is calm on the blogging front. Sorry for all the malware fire drills the last two weeks. Nate said I should give another update and explain what happened. Basically, because I’m on a shared server, I was hacked. Both times it happened, we caught it right away, so no damage was done. Except Google blacklisting me, which was a pain. Everything is fine now, the site is totally safe. Phew! I am probably going to shell out some cash and start paying for a dedicated server, to minimize the risk. Although…my developer said he’s never seen one site get hacked so much in such a short period of time, so I think there was simply a lot of bad luck at play, too. Thanks for trusting me and coming back!

    On to business…

    MONDAY:
    - Oriental Chicken Salad
    - Dumplings

    TUESDAY:
    - Mac & Cheese (we’re going to the Jelly Belly factory that day, can’t wait!)

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Red beans and rice (Hey butterfly wishes….have a recipe you’d like to share? :) )
    - Cornbread
    - Carrots and dip

    THURSDAY:
    - Stuffed Shells

    FRIDAY:
    - Frittatas (flavor TBD – I have a billion eggs in the fridge that need to get used!)

    SATURDAY:
    - Eat out

    SUNDAY:
    - Chili (sorry for anyone living with heat and humidity right now…it’s downright chilly where we are, I’m ready to whip out the Halloween decorations!)

I think you know what to do now…share your menus! And have a fantastic week….summer is almost over, eat it up!

  3. Sunday, August 8

    Week 185 Menu

My mom is making dinner as I write this post and she just set this bowl of fruit dip on the table. I love visiting my parents’ and my grandparents’ homes and seeing dishes that have been around longer than me still getting used on a regular basis. I wonder which bowls I’ll serve to Cate and Anna in 30 years that we are using today.

I’m still in New Jersey, but the girls and I fly home tomorrow. What a trip it’s been! I can’t believe how much we’ve done in just two weeks. This week I actually do have to plan a menu since we’ll be home and needing nourishment. Not that ice cream isn’t nourishing.

    MONDAY:
    - On an airplane!

    TUESDAY:
    - Caprese paninis
    - Crusty bread

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Boursin Turkey Baguette

    THURSDAY:
    - Butternut squash soup

    FRIDAY:
    - Leftovers

    SATURDAY:
    - Eat out

    SUNDAY:
    - Oriental Chicken Salad

Okay, your turn! Please share your weekly menu! Whether it’s what you had last week or what you’re going to have this week, we love knowing either way!

  4. Sunday, July 25

    Week 183 Menu

It is so good to be back on the Cape.

I love being steps away from the beach.

I love seeing my girls’ hair get curlier by the minute in the ocean air.

I love the weathered cedar siding, everywhere you look.

I love watching my children’s childhood memories being created, unfolding in beautiful ways.

    This is my magical place.

Our menu is quite fluid this week. I love vacation.

    Saturday (last night):
-Our annual Sweet Tomatoes pizza binge

    Sunday (tonight):
    - My mom is making Chicken Croissants tonight

As for the rest of the week…my mom is planning on making fajitas another night, I’m sure Nate’s mom will do a fantastic cookout. We’ll definitely be eating at Seafood Sam’s. Beyond that, we’ll play it by ear.

Please share your menu for the week! You need to step in while I’m off relaxing on the beach. Thanks for being so responsible and stuff.

And if you do plan a menu while I’m off galavanting around the East Coast…PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE share it on here! I need you all to inspire one another with your meal plans, since I’ll be failing miserably at that job. ;)

Time to share your menu! Bring it on! We need you!

  6. Sunday, July 11

The light is always just right.

    And drinking fountains abound.

Too bad we still have to eat and I still have to plan a menu every week! ;) Actually, this week is kind of nice…no traveling of any kind. A little break before more travel madness ensues next week! Sorry for the multiple carry-overs from last week’s menu…things were bananas.

  8. Sunday, June 27

    Week 179 Menu

Don’t these lollypops make you happy? They were decoration (and tasty treat!) at the food workshop I was a part of at Evo ’10. People snagged all of the lollypops except the orange and turquoise ones. I thought that was kind of funny. I think there were 10 of that color left at the end of the afternoon. What does that say about human behavior? Probably nothing, actually. ;)

    apline house lollypops web

The food workshop was at the Alpine House, a beautiful restaurant at The Canyons resort where the conference was held. The food session was amazing and I am so grateful I got to be a part of it. I will write more about my experience tomorrow or Tuesday.

    Menu time!

    MONDAY:
    - Perhaps someone in Utah will feed us. Hint hint. Or I’ll hit one of the 8 kabillion delicious burger joints in town.

    TUESDAY:
    - Driving home. Hello disgusting road food. Perhaps I’ll actually get some sandwiches packed before we go.

    WEDNESDAY:
    - First day back, so it’s spaghetti night for sure!

Please share your menus for the week – as always, I can’t wait to see them! Have a great week!

  9. Sunday, June 20

Week 178 Menu and Happy Father’s Day!

Happy Father’s Day! Nate requested Indian food, so I’m making Murgh Makhani (Butter Chicken) today.  I can’t wait to eat it myself! We’re having a combined Father’s Day-Birthday celebration for Nate today, and he’s requested Strawberry Shortcake for his birthday cake. I’ve never made traditional strawberry shortcake before, so if anyone has a good recipe for the biscuits, please share!

The girls and I are driving to Utah on Tuesday, where I will be speaking at the Evo Conference (The Evolution of Women in Social Media). I’m SO excited and will definitely be reporting on the trip. This means I don’t have a menu this week, so I am relying on YOU to share and inspire one another!

    MONDAY:
    - Whatever I can throw together while frantically finishing up last minute trip preparations. I think I’ll be stealing one of your ideas from Friday’s post!

Oh, and don’t forget to call your dad.

  10. Sunday, June 13

    Week 177 Menu

I have 12 roma tomatoes. What should I do with them? I’m thinking some caprese salad. Maybe a Tuscan bread salad? Or maybe something you suggest…hint, hint.

    roma tomatoes web

Last week was the very busy last week of school, among other things. I only made one thing on my menu plan, mostly because we never made it to the grocery store! What in the world did we eat? I know we ate out twice, but what happened the rest of those days? It’s a mystery! This will actually be the subject of a reader-requested post coming up this week…so save any comments on this subject until then! :)

  11. Sunday, June 6

    Week 176 Menu

Summer is almost upon us…I simply can’t believe it’s the last week of school and there are beach towels hanging out to dry on my patio furniture. Where does the time go?!

  12. Sunday, May 30

    Week 175 Menu

Here’s our breakfast this morning, puffed oven pancake. It’s Cate’s new favorite breakfast food. I think they’re pretty good, but honestly, the best part is how EASY they are to make. I’m glad Cate is so easily pleased…at least for now. Knowing how 5-year-olds are about food, she’ll hate them tomorrow. ;)

    Week 174 Menu

This weekend was all about my friend Faye, which is a very good thing. Faye is an amazing pastry chef who creates wonderful delights like this nut tart.

    faye's nut tart web

Yesterday I attended Faye’s artisan bread workshop at my local Sur La Table, which I am going to have to share more of with you in a separate post. As for the nut tart, it was awesome and I’m going to hopefully share the recipe with you in yet another post…although I’m pretty sure it’s one I’ll just let Faye make for me rather than attempt myself! I may as well let the artist do what she does best, right? ;)

I need to confess, my menu pretty much didn’t happen last week. I’m too tired right now to even remember what DID happen! Anyway, that explains the multiple repeats from last week. Forgive me!

    MONDAY:
    - Baked stuffing-coated chicken with a nice veggie

  14. Sunday, May 16

    Week 173 Menu…and a major clarification!

Before we get to today’s menu, I need to clear something up. Yesterday my friend Nikki used my lemon bar recipe. She told me the bars came out great, but that she used butter instead of margarine. “Butter instead of margarine?” I asked.  ”Yeah, your recipe calls for margarine.” “No it doesn’t. I use butter. I’ve never even purchased margarine. I would never put margarine in a recipe,” I replied in complete confidence that Nikki was nuts. “No, Jane, your recipe says margarine.” I whipped out my iPhone as fast as my little fingers could whip and sure enough…my recipe said margarine. Oh, the horror I felt upon this discovery! (It may sound like I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. Just ask Nikki.)

    butter sticks web

So, let me clarify: the lemon bars use BUTTER. Never margarine. If you made the recipe and used margarine and wondered why the bars weren’t as good as I claimed they were, now you know. The primary reason I think they are SO DELICIOUS is because the crust is a beautiful variation of shortbread. And the reason shortbread is SO DELICIOUS is because it’s basically a giant stick of butter with a little flour and sugar thrown in. This was purely a case of cut-and-paste gone wrong. I had created the recipe from a few different recipes I’d tried over the years. Obviously I read right over this very important word. Ack!

Now that we’ve got that all cleared up, how about a menu? My rant is over and I feel better already. (I hope my margarine-loving readers don’t take any offense to this post…although I do still think you should switch to butter ;) )

    MONDAY:
    - Baked stuffing-coated chicken with a nice veggie

    TUESDAY:
    - Butternut Squash Soup

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Cannelloni

    THURSDAY:
    - Leftovers

    FRIDAY:
    - Breakfast for dinner

    SATURDAY:
    - Eat out

    SUNDAY:
    - Creamy Potato Leek Soup (without any cream – it’s a fab recipe!)

Can’t wait to see your menus for the week! Please share!

  15. Sunday, May 9

    Week 172 Menu…Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day! Today I not only get to celebrate mother’s day with my sweet daughters, but we are also with my own mother and my mother’s mother. This never happens. It makes me happy.

And, since it’s Mother’s Day, I’m giving myself the gift of not planning a menu. Okay, I can’t totally give up on it…but I am going to take it easy on myself since I AM on vacation and all. And maybe I’ll even let some of you slack off, too…but you better believe I’ll get back on you next week to get planning again!

    MONDAY:

  16. Sunday, May 2

    Week 171 Menu

Right now I am driving a van for a running relay from Napa to Santa Cruz. I’m too wimpy to actually run a relay myself (see my empty sneakers? They’ll stay empty all weekend!), but I don’t want to be left out of the fun, so I’m a driver for Eat.Blog.Run. Getting ready for the race has been grueling, I tell ya. Read about my strict training regimen here.

    eatblogrun web

Just because I’m off galavanting down the California coast doesn’t mean you get off the hook for menus! And can I say, when I called you slackers last week you stepped up! We totally got more menus. I loved it! Perhaps I need to employ the tough love approach more often. ;)

    MONDAY:
    - Bertucci’s Tortellini (didn’t get to it last week!)

    TUESDAY:
    - Baked French Toast

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Pizza – eating out, because we have soccer that night AND I’ll be packing for a big road trip the next day

    THURSDAY:
    - Driving to Utah for my little sister’s college graduation – Go Annie!

    FRIDAY:
    - With family…I don’t even know which family we’ll be with that day, I certainly can’t plan the meal! ;)

    SATURDAY:
    - Graduation Day! I think we’ll probably eat out!

    SUNDAY:
    - Happy Mother’s Day! Again, with family…no idea!

Okay, this week I appeal to you to share your menus on the basis that you need to inspire one another with ideas since I’m not cooking much at all. Have a wonderful week!!

Good Morning! I have a lovely glass of juice for you to start your day.

    tropicana sweeps web

Speaking of orange juice…okay, not really a segue since I totally set it up…but…I keep forgetting to tell you about a Sweeps contest* from Tropicana. They actually set up a special code just for my readers, which means 3 of you will win a prize! Visit the Sweeps page and use the code VALENCIA. Grand Prize is a $50 Adidas card, First Prize is a 1-hour massage from Massage Envy (I will certainly envy whoever wins this, by the way), and Second Prize is a $10 Coleman gift card. The Sweeps end on April 28 at 11:59 PM CT. Good luck!

I can’t believe it’s already time for a menu…I looked at the date yesterday and could not believe how far into the year we are. Time, slow down just a bit, won’t you? I just know those little hands holding that glass of juice won’t be little for long enough.

So get you’re menus up here! And, don’t think I didn’t notice some of you are slacking off…or haven’t posted in the first place. Hop to it!

  19. Sunday, April 11

    Week 168 Menu

Pistachios are officially on my list of ‘beautiful foods I love looking at when I cook’ (I’m an artist, I can’t help but be a little obsessed with what food looks like). Blueberries still take the top spot, but pistachios aren’t far behind.  Yesterday when I was cracking a bunch for a recipe, it was the first time I really looked at them. Of course there’s that vibrant green color I’ve always liked, but what I hadn’t really noticed before was the contrasting purple in the skins. I love it.

    pretty pistachios web

On to the menu. I have a couple duplicates from last week. We were able to draw out our ham leftovers longer than I anticipated (I even froze lentil soup AND ham in the end!).

    MONDAY:
