    Camping Treat: Banana Boats

We’re back from camping at Big Sur. It was WONDERFUL. Relaxing and fun, with no phones or computers…the perfect weekend! I am now buried in laundry, but it was worth it.

We went with a group of families that have been going on this camping trip for the last 22 years. They have it down to a science, including the cooking. We ate very well! We also learned a new camping “recipe” that was delectably gooey: Banana Boats. We made them at night along with s’mores…although, we did have them for breakfast one morning as well!

    Banana Boats
    - 1 unpeeled banana
    - chocolate chips
    - mini marshmallows
    - heavy duty foil

Lay the banana on its “back” and peel just the top open. Cut out slices of banana every half inch or so, leaving every other piece in the peel. Stuff chocolate chips and mini marshmallows between the pieces.

Close the banana, tightly wrap in heavy duty foil, then throw on the campfire for ~10 minutes. Open and enjoy! (Note – they are very hot when they first come off the fire…so be careful!)

    I’m Home…Phew!

Hello food friends! I’m home after a month of traveling. It’s nice to be home, but it was a FANTASTIC trip for so many reasons. The good news for you is I might actually start cooking again!

Doesn’t this pizza look good? That’s because it is! Bertucci’s margherita pizza is one of my favorites anywhere. I’m so glad I got to have some on this last trip…it’s been years! If you want to see another picture of the same pizza, be sure to check out my guest post on Make and Takes today, Meal Planning Tip: Be a Restaurant Copycat. I’m sure you all have good ideas to add to the post, so go read it and comment!

    Week 134 Menu…and Jaffrey Fireworks

I went to one of the coolest things you can go to in the WORLD last night. I know I’m prone to hyperbole, but this time I’m telling it like it is. This is a once in a lifetime (or hopefully, if your lucky, once a year!) experience – the Jaffrey Fireworks!

If you can ever work it to get to Jaffrey, New Hampshire the third Saturday of August, you should. Atlas Fireworks, a world-class, big player in the fireworks world, is based in Jaffrey and every summer they put on a show with their latest and greatest. No words or pictures can even come close to describing one of their shows. It’s simply unreal.

Starting Wednesday, it’s back to real life. Wow, I can’t believe vacation is almost over. What a month! Gotta keep the menu items simple this week, ease back into things. :)

    MONDAY:
    - Driving from NH to MA

    TUESDAY:
    - Flying to California!

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Spaghetti
    - Salad

    THURSDAY:
    - Homemade pizza

    FRIDAY:
    - Quesadillas

    SATURDAY:
    - Eat out

    SUNDAY:
    - Orange chicken
    - Rice
    - Veggie

Time for everyone to share their menus – bring it on!

    New York City Jaunt

My 9-month-pregnant sister-in-law and I took my two girls into NYC last Thursday to see my other sister-in-law and her fiance who live in the city. Did you follow that? :) We met them in the East Village for lunch, because what is a trip to NYC without food?

We ate lunch at S’Mac…a restaurant that only serves macaroni + cheese. Well, they also serve one green salad and DELICIOUS warm cookies. But that’s it.

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical of some of the flavors. But everything was AWESOME. Both sisters-in-law got Masala mac n cheese…which was so tasty. I ordered the garden lite, and it was oh so yummy. S’Mac was also surprisingly affordable, which is nice in NYC. All around a great lunch!

After lunch we walked over to Veniero’s Pasticceria and Caffe…because if there is a good cannoli within a mile of my person, I must eat it. And I did. In fact, I ended up eating more cannoli than I am willing to fess up to. Needless to say, I was a happy camper. Their cannoli was SCRUMPTIOUS.

The shop was FULL of beautiful pastry, cakes and cookies galore. (Check out the size of that cake above Cate’s head. How is that real?)

And I can’t even put into words how heavenly Veniero’s smelled. The line was very long, so we had to wait a while. We were so absorbed in looking at everything, we missed our number when it was called! They let us jump in line once we realized what happened…phew!

    Back in Bagel Country

I know I’ve written about bagels in the northeast before. More than once, in fact. But I have yet to find a real, live, honest-to-goodness bagel outside of the tri-state area (NJ/NY/CT). So, when I’m in Jersey and get the opportunity to eat an amazing bagel, I just have to write about it. HAVE to. I can’t help myself.

This morning my dad picked up bagels at Chester Bagel, one of my favorite bagel haunts. My all-time favorite is H&H Bagel in NYC, but I rarely get a chance to get into the city when I visit. Anyway, when I opened the bag this morning my heart was all a flutter. I know, I’m a little crazy, but these bagels are OH SO GOOD. They are bagels that know how to be bagels.

Here’s a little guide for identifying REAL bagels.

    • The outside is shiny and crispy
    • The inside is moist and chewy
    • The word “bread” never even crosses your mind as you are eating your bagel
    • It is so big you can barely eat the whole thing, but of course you do because you can’t stop yourself
    • ‘Everything’ bagels include garlic, onion, sesame seeds, poppy seeds and salt

I think that about covers it! Enough rambling about bagels. Well, until next summer vacation in New Jersey, of course. ;)

    Week 132 Menu

Well, our week on Cape Cod is over. The time passed far too quickly, but at least we went from one beautiful place to another. I’m with the girls visiting my family in New Jersey for the next week. My parents are currently living on a farm with horses galloping everywhere you look. This is the view off the back porch. Pretty close to heaven, right?

We’re not back to normal life yet, but we are going to be doing some cooking, so I’m planning a loose menu. Here goes!

    MONDAY:
    - Chimento Chicken, aka Chicken Croissants

    TUESDAY:
    - Pulled pork

    WEDNESDAY:
    - Leftovers

    THURSDAY:
    - Hot dogs and hamburgers

    FRIDAY:
    - Eat out

    SATURDAY:
    - Baby Shower for my sister in law…need to plan a light dinner. Any suggestions?

    SUNDAY:
    - Not sure about our plans for this day…will cross that bridge when we get to it

Alrighty, folks, time to post your weekly menu! I loved all of the first-time menu posters last week, keep it coming! Remember…ALL menus are welcome! Simple or fancy, we love them all!

    Lovely Cape Cod

Two little things I absolutely adore about lovely Cape Cod:

    Hydrangeas EVERYWHERE.

Seashell driveways, seashell roads, seashell parking lots.

  8. Friday, July 31

    Sprinkles!

We went to Ice Cream Sandwich last night, another annual vacation tradition. Every year I stand there reading the menu for far too long, until I remember that all I want is soft serve with chocolate sprinkles.

  9. Thursday, July 30

    Seafood Sam’s

What’s a trip to Cape Cod without seafood? Last night we enjoyed our annual feast at Seafood Sam’s in Sandwich, MA, a yummy, family-friendly restaurant that we visit every year.

    I can’t resist Baked Stuffed Shrimp. I just can’t.

How about this baked seafood platter? It was everything I could do to NOT steal that lobster claw from my sister!

Next we have lobster ravioli, which was surprisingly light…and of course tasty.

    Fried scallops anyone?

For those of you who don’t like seafood, the chicken tenders are awesome. I didn’t get a picture, but the onion rings are delectable as well.

I loved these clothes pins by the front register. They were practically begging to be photographed.

    ‘Fishing’ for Crabs

The house that we’re renting this week on Cape Cod sits between a beautiful marsh and the beach. On the marsh side there is a long dock. The owner of the house told us if we dangled uncooked bacon on string off the dock, we could catch crabs.

Nate took Cate and her cousin Abby out to catch crabs yesterday afternoon. This activity kept the girls occupied for a really long time.

I’ve never seen two four-year-olds so focused for such a long time. It was adorable. I couldn’t help but think about how at that very moment we were forming their childhood memories. I hope this one stays with them, it’s a goodun.

In case you’re wondering, we did not eat the crabs…or the bacon. ;)

  11. Tuesday, July 28

    Back in Dunkin’ Donuts Country

I back am in the thick of Dunkin’ Donuts Country. I forget how prevalent DD is in the Northeast until I step off the plane and see the world painted in orange and pink.

And even though these are not my favorite donuts, I simply can’t help myself. I do believe we are on Dozen #4. And we’ve been here three days. Scary.

    Time to EAT the donuts.

  12. Sunday, July 26

    Week 131 Menu

I’m on the Cape. And there’s no where I’d rather be. And I’m not planning a menu.

I’m on vacation.  I never take vacation, from graphic design or keeping up with this blog. Which isn’t a bad thing, but I’m just going to take it easy this week.  I may share some of our delicious Cape Cod eats with you, but I’m not planning on anything and just letting the ocean breeze carry me.

If you’re NOT on vacation, then please share your menu for the week! I’ll need some ideas when I get back in the groove next week! So please please plan and share a menu!

Show & Tell: Berkeley Bowl Marketplace

Last Friday my friend Melissa and I took a field trip to Berkeley Bowl Marketplace in Berkeley.  If you haven’t heard of the Berkeley Bowl, it is an independent supermarket known for its amazing produce section (some say the best in the country).

To really give you the flavor of the place, PLEASE go read this article in the LA Times.  It’s great.  I promise you will be entertained.  And check out this follow-up blog post by the author of the article. Awesome.

Of course, after reading THAT I had to go.  Plus my friend from Berkeley said the place rocks.  Melissa and I took our girls and had a blast browsing for well over an hour…and we didn’t even make it down the aisles.  The perimeter of the store kept us plenty busy!  I came home with many delectable treats.  A Friday morning well spent, to be sure!

And now, for the barrage of pictures!  One of the first things we saw was this olive bar, which was about twice as the big as the picture indicates.

The whole store was great, but seriously, the produce section was OFF. THE. HOOK.

I didn’t even know what half the stuff was.  Like this Mexican chayote.  Anyone?  I didn’t buy one, and not just because I didn’t know what to do with it.  Yeah, touching a chayote is what I imagine being attacked by a few dozen porcupines must feel like.

The best part was the amazing variety.  So many different kinds of every fruit and veggie.

Of course they had my favorite young Thai coconuts, refrigerated as they should be (Safeway, take note).  (Seriously, people, don’t ever buy those brown, hairy coconuts.  These puppies kick butt. But I digress…back to the Bowl.)

These grapes were TINY. And so sweet. I bought them simply because they were cute, and thankfully they tasted good too.

Everywhere I turned I saw beautiful produce.  A feast for the eyes as well as the belly!

On the way out we grabbed some ‘morning rolls,’ which looked like they might be a bit dry. Au contraire. They were moist, buttery, little bits of heaven. As we ate them, the bakery truck that brought them to the Bowl drove by.

I was a little sad there were no petitioners outside the store yelling at me for ignoring them.  And, while the store was very busy, people were friendly and even liked my kids!  Just when I thought we had navigated the Berkeley Bowl safely…

We were leaving the store and the bagger was showing me where a picnic table was located nearby.  Apparently I was blocking the way because I heard, in a very irritated tone, “EXCUSE ME!  EXCUSE ME!  EXCUSE ME!”  I turned and a woman said (okay, yelled), “Excuse me, MA’AM! You are blocking everyone’s way!”  To which I replied, “I know!”

Take that!  I came to the Berkeley Bowl ready to fight, lady. ;)

    Ladies Who Lunch

My mother-in-law and I grabbed lunch at Cafe Borrone today. It was guuh-uuhd. We also got $25, 1-hour massages at Happy Feet foot spa in Palo Alto.  That was also guuh-uuuhd.  We ladies are livin’ the life today.  Not looking forward to Pat’s departure on Saturday!

If you live in the Bay Area…I highly recommend you re-create my day.  Cafe Borrone is always delish.  And Happy Feet is my new fave!!!

  15. Monday, January 26

    And…we’re home!

We made it home safely last night.  This little weekend getaway has made me very grateful for the temperate climate in which we live…wow, it’s a lot of work bundling your kids up everywhere you go!  Living in coastal California sure has spoiled us.  But I DO miss beautiful sights like this…

It’s official, I’m in love with Lake Tahoe.

I’ve added my menu to yesterday’s post.  And if you haven’t posted your menu yet, hop to it!

    First trip to Berkeley

We met some friends the other night in Berkeley for dinner.  They had both lived there for years and love the ‘hood, so we decided it was time to make the trek and see what it was all about.  We were not disappointed!  Great food, fun neighborhood, cool campus.

We ate dinner at Gypsy’s, an Italian restaurant close to campus. The food was great and we could not believe the prices!  Living in Silicon Valley has it’s advantages, but one of them is NOT cheap food.  Even our local burger joint puts a dent in our wallet.  I find whenever I venture outside of my little silicon bubble, I’m pleasantly surprised at the prices (it also makes me a little bitter about my bubble!).  Anyway, Gypsy’s was delish and a great value.

Then off for dessert!  How about a little gelato at Gelataria Naia?  Yum!

My next Berkeley visit will be the Berkeley Bowl.  I can’t wait…although, I’m a little nervous…

  17. Saturday, November 22

    Ahhh, San Diego!

As I’ve already mentioned, last week I went to San Diego for a fun weekend with some friends.  The weather was warm, the ocean blue, and the food delicious!  I have to share a few of my favorite San Diego haunts with you!

Extraordinary Desserts is hands down my favorite food spot in San Diego.  Once again it did not disappoint…although, they did not have The Viking that night, which was very sad.  But my Caribe chocolate cake and Caramelized Apple & Pumpkin Bread Pudding helped ease the pain.

Breakfast at Pipes Cafe in Encinitas was a must. The food was great, as usual, and being able to stare out at the ocean while I ate…as heavenly as my buttery french toast.

The trip was so wonderful.  I can’t believe we got to live in PARADISE for as long as we did.  I miss you, San Diego!

    Happy Birthday to Me!

Today we are heading off to Carmel to celebrate my big 3-0. I can’t wait to get there!

As a little birthday present to myself, I am leaving my computer at home and staying off-line the whole two days we’re gone. Seriously. No email. No work. No blogging. As much as I love all those things…okay, well, as much as I love blogging…I am so excited to UNPLUG.

See you Thursday! Better have a birthday cake ready for me when I get back! :)

    Friday Eye Candy: Tartine Bakery

How about a little eye candy from Tartine Bakery in San Francicso. I provided a taste of Tartine here and here, but today you get the whole meal.

Warning: These pictures will make you want to find the nearest bakery and pig out. TWFD is not responsible for readers’ weight gain.

This is the storefront. Looks like a movie set, no?

Just a simple sign propped up in the front window to let you know where you are.

They also have the Tartine cookbook propped up in the window. I consider this a must-have cookbook. I’ll have to ask Santa…or Amazon.

You can see into the kitchen from the front. Love it.

    And now, for the food…

Of course, we had to get something for the road…

    J’adore Tartine!

    I Heart New York…mostly

I’m home! After 5 weeks of travel craziness, I am actually HOME. It’s nice to be here, but the trip was completely wonderful and I’m sad it’s over.

Monday before we left town, my dad and the girls ventured into NYC with me to have lunch with my sister-in-law and her boyfriend. We grabbed a quick bite at Terramare Cafe on the upper east side. The food was tasty, especially the fresh parmesan cheese on my dad’s pasta. Delizioso! But, seriously, what is with the cost of food in NYC? I can’t believe how much you can spend simply on food!!! This is why ‘I heart New York…mostly.’

In fact, let’s play a little game. See if you can guess how much the Buffalo Mozzarella Pizza (personally-sized pizza, mind you) & Artichoke Paremesan Panini were. Give up? $17 each! CRAZY! I mean, it was good and that parmesan cheese ruled, but really? $17? Gotta love New York.
