French Butter Crock

Last week someone commented on here asking if I have a french butter crock (a comment which seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth, by the way), to which I answered that I had a friend who used one and always thought I might get one but never had. Literally the next day I saw a Butter Bell on sale at Sur La Table. Of course I snagged it and I love it!

French butter crocks keep butter fresh by sealing it away from oxygen. And the crock keeps butter at a perfectly spreadable consistency – not too hard, not too soft. It’s like magic. You just fill the pot about 1/3 with cold water and then invert the cup of butter into the water, changing out the water every three days or so. I plan to change out my water whenever I run the dishwasher so I don’t forget!

I have a Butter Bell brand crock. I’m very happy with it. The red color is really cute, and it comes in lots of other colors, too. Le Creuset makes butter crocks as well, and their version holds 1 1/2 sticks of butter, as opposed to mine that only holds 1 stick of butter. I also love how the Le Creuset crock looks (just like how I love how everything they make looks).  I’m sure you can find other brands out there, too, if you like shopping around!

I will never go back to our old butter dish. I’m completely sold.

  1. I’m so excited! You have given me a solution to my warm, mushy, summer butter. It’s been getting warmer and my butter has been getting softer. Ick.

  2. 3

Ooh, I want one of these!

  3. 4

It was me!!!!! And it was on your Facebook not on the blog itself. I want one so badly! I’m glad to hear you found one and love it 🙂

I’m so glad you commented, Fran…I was pretty sure I’d gone nuts! 😉

I hope you indulge and get one for yourself… 🙂

  5. 6

thanks for enlightening me…i’d never even HEARD of a butter crock, but now that i have i totally have to have one!!!

  6. 7

I have a decades long love affair going on with Sur La Table – what’s not to love? Right?! It didn’t hurt that when I was in Baking School that I had a decent discount there, too! Way to get a girl hooked!

Very intrigued by the butter bell… have seen them over the years, and thought, “hmmm… wonder how that would work?” I’ll be interested to see what you think of it as time goes by!

    PS – it’s super cute!

I love those!! I got one for my MIL the last time we were in the US, and I love using it every time we visit. If it weren’t for a very destructive 16month old, I’d get one too. Glad you love it.

I’m so glad you posted this! I had forgotten how much I loved my Butter Crock. It got stashed away in one of my moves, and I need to go find it! Thanks for the reminder!

P.S. I picked mine up at a Ross/Marshall’s/TJMaxx for a song a few years ago. I don’t know how much they go for at Sur La Table, but I think I paid about $12.

Oh, I have to try one of these…not that big on butter or margarine, but boy is it cute. It is nice to have it at the right consistency when I plan to use it!

P.S. I heart Le Creuset too…Their customer service is great (I had a dish that I absolutely loved crack in the oven and they replaced it w/o a hassle!). Your brand is really cute even though it’s not L.C. =)

So I’d never heard of one of these – does this stay out on the counter – is that how it retains the perfect consistency?

    Jane Maynard

oh, yes, I wasn’t super clear about that. It stays on the counter – that’s why I like it, I hate hard butter when it’s time to spread it on something…it’s great!

  12. 13

So cute – I love these kind of things! We have a water butter dish at our cabin… but I think it’s time for an updated one, the red version is so classy! Since you love Le Creuset, check out the giveaway I’m doing on my blog!

  13. I have never heard of this but WANT ONE!!

  14. 15

I bought one after seeing one at an in-law’s house that lives in Utah. So as soon as I got home (NJ) i bought one. Unfortunately it’s so humid in the east here that after three days the butter gets all moldy. 🙁 Just a warning for all of you out there that live in the east.

goodness! I’m glad you posted, erin! good warning for the humid areas

  16. 17

this is weird. and i never knew a single french person who owned one.

that’s what Nate said, too! pretty funny. it is of french origin, but it is interesting neither you nor nate came across it!

Hi…I have had one of these butter crocks for years and I still love it. Leave it to the French, they’re serious about their butter. Mine is just like yours, except for the color (white with blue trim) and holds just one stick. I hven’t seen Le Creuset’s. Everyone who uses butter should definitely have one of these.

I’m new here and have been lurking around. You have a nice site and I’m enjoying myself. I just had to comment on the butter crock since I think it’s the neatest thing since sliced bread.

I just got a Le Creuset one for Christmas! We’ve been making a switch from margarine to butter, but I’m not a fan of trying to spread cold butter on bread. Very excited to try out the butter crock!
