Getting Back Into the Morning Rush Groove

It’s our last week of summer. We are living it up as much as we can this week before we get back into the school routine. That said, I think everyone in the family is excited for a new school year, especially our little Anna who cannot WAIT to wear her new school clothes.

There is one thing I am NOT looking forward to, however. Waking up in the morning. We are a family of sleepers. Nate and I both love to sleep, and our kids have inherited the gene. If we don’t wake the girls up in the morning, they routinely sleep until 8:30 or 9:00. It’s AWESOME. When you don’t have to go anywhere, that is. I am not looking forward to a school start time of 8:05.  I just don’t know how we’re going to do it!

Between the tattoos and the sneer, I think Anna may be turning into a pirate. And, as you can see, our family can even sleep when eating. We are THAT good at sleeping.

I’m trying to get my brain into morning routine mode. Planning out how I’m going to feed a baby, make lunches, get kids dressed and brushed along with feeding everyone breakfast sort of stresses me out. I always have the best of intentions with breakfast, but I often end up just grabbing a box of cereal. Nate, however, is great at pulling together nice, nutritious morning meals for the kids. He is especially good at omelettes and is the best smoothie maker this side of the Mississippi.

Most recently Nate has been making “juicies,” which the girls really like and don’t require us to remember to freeze fruit ahead of time. We just grab whatever juice is in the fridge, whatever fruit is in the fruit bowl and hit blend.

I’ve been working with Tropicana a bit recently. I appreciate their juice because it is made from fresh oranges and is 100% pure and natural. No added sugar especially makes me happy. The girls like to have a small cup of juice in the morning, but I wanted to come up with something a little more fun but still quick and easy for the start of school next week. Today we created Creamy Juicies!

It’s basically a creamsicle in a cup, only healthier. And it was super fast to make. It’s definitely going on my morning routine repertoire!

Creamy Juices
Recipe type: Dessert
  • 3 parts orange juice
  • 1 part milk
  • Small splash vanilla
  • A few handfuls of ice, to your liking
  1. Add juice, milk, vanilla then ice to your blender – blend! Add us much ice you like – less ice makes for a nice, cold drink. More ice makes for more of a slushy.

    Our school starts way too early, that’s for sure. I don’t understand it. To ease the transition I ordered school lunches for both kids each day next week. Not exactly economical but worth it at least for the first week to make it less torturous.

      seriously, why do they start school so early? kids need sleep! okay, done venting. 🙂

      I think I might follow suit and do hot lunch just that first week… 😉

    Make the lunches the night before ”” with leaving the house at 7:15am for school, there’s no way to make anything in the morning! I find it easy to make lunches when I’m making dinner or cleaning up dinner ”” better yet, wrap up some of the dinner leftovers for lunch. Way better than a boring old sandwich!
    We do a lot of turkey sausage that can be popped in the microwave and eggs in mugs. Easy ways to get good protein in the mornings.

    I always pack school lunches the night before. With 3 kids going to school and a toddler to feed breakfast, there is no way I can do it all in the morning. I make the lunches after supper is over. I try to do make ahead things that the kids can eat for breakfast. Waffles can be heated quickly in the toaster. Make biscuit egg sandwiches and freeze them. Microwave when needed – same with muffins. Check pinterest for ideas. That is where I found the egg biscuit idea.

    I used to think I’d make my kids fancy breakfasts before school, but now, I just make what I know they like and will eat. Their favorites. Oatmeal, toast, fruit, yogurt, frozen waffles, milk, cereal are all standards. They aren’t morning people either, and I’ve found waking them, getting them dressed, then letting them pick from their usual breakfast options is the best for us b/c they actually EAT and then I know their bellies are full. I also don’t mind if they wake, get dressed and watch a short tv show while i get bfast ready. Less fighting that way, and it helps them have something to look forward to when they grumpily get out of bed. And yes to packing lunch the night before, and I, too, will use dinner leftovers if they pack well for lunch. Good luck!!!

    Also, I’ve found that if I have to wake the baby, nurse him, and take him with me to school drop offs it makes him nice and tired. Ready for his morning nap when we get home, and some quiet time for mama in the morning. 😉

    To avoid the morning “diva” we pick out school clothes together the night before and have everything laid out, from hair bows to shoes.

    I also try to keep some breakfast food in the freezer. When I make muffins or french toast I just make a little extra and freeze. Breakfast burritos and smoothies freeze well to. I just set the smoothies in the fridge the night before ( I freeze them in little mason jelly jars.)

    These things let me spend a few extra minutes on lunch. I love to make a bento style lunch. I get lots if ideas from and

    My girls are 10 years apart so I have no clue how to get all of these done with a baby in one arm LOL 🙂

      I love those bento lunch ideas…such cute stuff!

      I like freezing the smoothies the night before – good idea!

      I do think we might need to do the pick out outfits the night before, make that part of their bedtime routine.

    I read an article about fresh juices not really being fresh and just a big batch of many juices. Do you know if Tropicana does this?

    I love OJ but after reading that I was leary of all the juices claims.

    Our girls have to be out the door by 7:15! Their elementary school starts at 7:45.

      coconut milk is a fab idea – I’m going to try that, too!
