Today is more of a PSA than anything. Sometime over the last year I discovered that our Albertson’s grocery store sold tortilla chips in the deli section. The chips had a sticker that said “Made here” and they looked pretty good, so I grabbed a bag.

HOLYCRAPTHECHIPSWERESOGOOD.
Like a million times better than any other tortilla chips you can buy. They’re just so fresh and the texture is just so good and it sort of tastes like if you made the chips yourself, which of course you will never ever do but now you don’t have to.
So, anyway, the Albertson’s where I got the chips closed down, so for the last 6 months I’ve been driving to another Albertson’s farther away JUST to buy chips. I usually buy like 3 bags at a time and I’m pretty sure the employees there call me the Crazy Chip Lady behind my back.

Then the other day my friend Debbie was like, “Um, they have those at VONS, too.” VONS is way closer to my house than Albertson’s, so I was like, “WHAT?!?!?!” and promptly went out and bought a bag. The VONS “homemade” tortilla chips are exactly like the Albertson’s chips and basically now I can die happy.
SOOOOOO…what is the point of this post? If your grocery store sells tortilla chips that are made on site, usually found in the produce or deli section of the store, you should be buying them and eating them and not buying any other tortilla chips ever. I have no idea how many stores do this in how many states, so I don’t know how helpful this advice is for you. But you need to at least investigate. The chips will change your life.

Can you tell I might be a little bit teensy weensy addicted to and obsessed with these chips? In my defense, everyone I introduce the chips to feels just as passionately, so I’m not totally crazy. I swear.

This is such a fun tip. I’m going to be on the look out for stores that make chips.
good luck with the search!
Safeway in Honolulu sells them too! (And they’re yummy, but obviously the Mi Pueblo ones in East Palo Alto are even yummier…)
well, now I need to move back to menlo park and get addicted to the mi pueblo chips – can’t believe I never had them! ugh!
Fred Meyer here in Oregon sells tortilla chips by the deli counter! Along with handmade tortillas. I’ve always been kinda curious, now I’ll give them a try for sure! Especially since we consume lots of tortilla chips in our family 🙂
okay, you need to try them! let us know how they are!
ooh! I have a fred meyer…totally heading to the deli counter to see what mine sells here in seattle!
Our local grocery store is Jewel, which I think is owned by, or the same company as Albertsons. I bought them for the first time about a year ago. It’s probably the only chip I’d ever have to buy! I love them, the kids love them…your assessment is spot on! And, they’re not that much more expensive. I think our bags are 2.50, and I don’t think the quantity is much less than a regular bag of chips. The best with homemade guacamole!
I am the same way, I really think I will not ever buy any other tortilla chips. I had what used to be my favorite brand a few weeks ago (a local san diego company) and they tasted like fritos to me after these grocery store chips! 🙂
anyway, I agree with you on all fronts! 🙂
the comments on my facebook post about this are great, just posting a link here so I can find it later! 🙂

I need to hunt some of these down! Thanks for the tip!!!
I live in Austin, Texas and our local grocery makes fresh tortillas on site. They are so good, not expensive but so much better than what you get in the bread aisle. Last time I visited my parents in Minnesota I brought several packages for my Parents.
oh, man, I am jealous! I wish our grocery store had homemade tortillas! you are a good daughter to take them to minnesota! 😉
I’ve recently discovered the vons tortilla chips and you’re not wrong. I’ve made trips recently just for their chips (I really love their salsa also) but they’ve been out of the chips recently. Was wondering if they only made them at certain times or what?
Vons drives me bananas! Albertsons always has the chips in stock, but Vons is so hit and miss. I too have gone to their store just to grab a bag of chips only to discover they didn’t have them that day. So weird! I don’t know what the deal is – probably you and I both should ask the store manager what’s up!
I gre up jn El Monte ca in a Hispanic part of town and moved to C later a few miles from Santana as we call it.
These are the closest to frying corn tortillas at home. They are good!
IF Zulu have a deep fryer buying corn
Tortillas at a Hispanic market is a third of the cost but a pita. And better yet again but if not this is as good as it gets.
Now j. All honesty haveing a small bit of prepared masa in the fridge ready to go w a tortilla press is pretty dammed easy. And a fresh corn tortilla is amazing in the taste hit off the comal
