Every Thanksgiving I write about cranberry slush. Because the whole reason for the existence of this blog is to convert all of America to my family’s tradition of making cranberry slush each Thanksgiving. Now you know my evil master plan.
And now that you know the plan, I have to kill you. Okay, not really. But you do now understand just how much I love cranberry slush and that it’s a must for me on Thanksgiving. I would hazard to guess that I’ve never experienced Thanksgiving without it.
So, imagine my utter despair today when I couldn’t find my colander and giant wooden pestle, the tools you see in the photo on the cranberry slush post. When we moved in February and I ended up with enough space in my kitchen to store a fork and a plate and not much more, I stored a bunch of my kitchen wares in boxes. And apparently I stored my colander and pestle. The horror! I was convinced this was going to be the worst Thanksgiving ever. (What? You think I’m exaggerating?)
Nikki (my friend who has saved me on more than one occasion and not all of the kitchen variety) had a nice big sieve for me to borrow. Which brings me to the whole point of this post. A sieve and a big serving spoon work GREAT. See, years ago I tried using a tupperware strainer and it was a huge pain in the patootie. So, I thought the colander and pestle were the only way to go. But they aren’t! The sieve and spoon are straining my cranberries just like they’re supposed to. If you haven’t ever made cranberry slush because you don’t have a colander and a pestle, never fear! If you have a sieve and a spoon, hop to it! You can still freeze your slush TONIGHT for serving tomorrow. You have time! Click here for the recipe.
P.S. While I was photographing the sieve freezing my tail off on the back porch, I took a picture of my socks. Which I was going to write about. Because I’m mad I have to be wearing big fluffy socks. Because it’s COLD. And then I looked up and saw palm trees. And remembered it is November after all. And I was looking at PALM TREES. And I decided I better stop complaining. Because I might have more than one of you throwing snowballs at me.
Off to finish making slush! Yippee!
Happy Thanksgiving. It is 17 degrees in Utah, so no sympathy here..ha!
Hi! First time commenting although I’ve been reading your site for a little while. I absolutely love cranberry sauce, and this looks amazing! I might have to try it. Also, it was 85 degrees today here in Miami. 😉
Jane, as my husband, daughter and I all snuggle in one bed under a down comforter, I was just thinking the same thing – 50 degrees in the sunlight seems really cold to me. Then I thought about glutenfreegirl, celiacteen, and whatsfordinnermom in State of WA, Canada, and Alaska and thought that I would really sound whiny if I said anything. But dang, we just don’t dress for cold weather in California. That’s the problem.
Have a great Thanksgiving and I’m glad you were able to secure the spoon and sieve 🙂
I second Maria. And I just drove here from CA yesterday. (Although I was thinking it was pretty cold there too.) Utah is MUCH COLDER!!!
We make that cranberry slush for every wedding. It is delicious. I never thought about making it for Thanksgiving, but it is a fabulous idea! Thanks for sharing.
OK, so I just made this, took a little un-frozen slush off the top to sample, and can’t wait to try the frozen slush tomorrow – my sample was fantastic. Got to admit: I spiked it – so delish! And then I bragged about it on FB, so it now appears half of Seattle will be making this tomorrow! Thanks Jane!
PS – my friend didn’t have a mesh colander, so she used a handblender on the berries – thoughts?
yea! so glad your sample was good!
you can do a blender I suppose…but the point of the colander is to weed out all the skins, and if you blend you’re just blending the skins up, which I’m sure is fine…but probably best to strain. but, seriously, I’m thinking it will still taste great! 🙂
Sounds soooo delicious!!
I think your comment should have been “wow! glad I could save thanksgiving!” 😉
We had a blizzard this week, so I definitely could throw snowballs at you for mentioning cold. Happy Thanksgiving!
I love all the weather reports (and snowballs!)…. ha ha! 🙂
I think miami deserves more snowballs than me, right? 😉
Beautiful in Phoenix. Doors are open, it’s sunshiney outside. May have to wear a sweater if I go out though.
Lady, it’s 12 degrees outside.
TWELVE.
It was -2 when Viktor left for work this morning. So, yeah, not feeling your pain at all.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING! I LOVE YOU.
You are hilarious. 57 is “cold.”
And I’ve never used a pestle, just a spoon. Works great!
You can complain–we’re on the Florida panhandle this year, and just spent the last 2 days at the beach in 75 degree sunshine. And we’re loving it. It may not feel quite like a traditional Thanksgiving, but I’ll take a good beach day anytime.
it was about 70 here in north carolina!just once i would love to have a white christmas.
