Ice Cream and the Cape

Cape Cod and ice cream go hand in hand. I think every town on the Cape has an ice cream shop, most often selling homemade ice cream and with a loyal following claiming that that particular ice cream shop is the best on the Cape.

Our family visitsΒ Ice Cream Sandwich in Sandwich, MA every year. Usually we plan an ice cream night and go just once. This year? Um, yeah, we’ve been eating a lot of ice cream. Let’s not count the visits. No, really. No counting allowed.

By the way, I have created the perfect ice cream cone. Homemade waffle cone with homemade black raspberry ice cream topped with chocolate jimmies.* Heaven, people. Heaven.

*When I’m not in the northeast, I call sprinkles ‘sprinkles.’ When I’m here, I do as the Romans do and sprinkles suddenly become ‘jimmies.’ I think that’s because if I say ‘sprinkles,’ suddenly everyone within a 5-mile radius is looking at me like I have lobsters crawling out of my ears. Locally caught lobster, of course.

In case you were wondering about the rumor that the phrase jimmies is racist in origin, it’s not true. No guilt necessary when ordering your ice cream!

As I was researching all of this very important information, I discovered sprinkles/jimmies are also called “hundreds and thousands.” Romans or not, THAT is a mouthful. I am decidedly too lazy to ever use that particular phrase!

I had a really interesting lavender/fig ice cream at this place in the Wellfleet vicinity on the Cape (sorry I can’t remember the name). Have you seen any sharks yet?

that does sound interesting, intriguing and delish!

no sharks. pretty quiet week on the water for us! πŸ™‚

  3. my hubby and i have just come home from vacation, and icecream in chocolate dipped waffle cones were a staple while we were away… sans the “jimmies” πŸ™‚

  4. i’ve heard hundreds and thousands but not jimmies πŸ™‚

my girls want ice cream now after those pictures πŸ™‚ they look yummy

  5. 5

Jimmies they are!! I still say it occasionally and when I do people tend to look at me like, well, you know! Have you ever been to Mad Martha’s on Martha’s Vineyard?? Another favorite. We are now engaged in the tedious task of finding “our” ice cream place here in our new town. It’s tough work but someone has to do it. I tasted a fabulous Georgia Peach frozen custard this week…

Last summer I had an ice cream float sample at “Taste of the Upper West Side”. Guiness ice cream in rhubarb soda. Simply Divine!

  7. 7

Mmmm…. black raspberry with jimmies. πŸ™‚ I may have to get some of that this weekend when I visit my folks.

  8. 8

that is the best looking ice cream i’ve ever seen, way better than anything they have here in utah! yum!

any one in the cape area MUST go to four seas in centerville. it’s this hole-in-the-wall place built on the slant of a hill, down the street from the beach. any flavor is fantastic– they even offer cantaloupe!

  10. 10

I am from Massachusetts, but currently reside in Florida, I still call them jimmies, and people still look at me like I’m insane.

I am from the mid-atlantic, and I always called the multicolored kind sprinkles and the brown kind jimmies. I just asked my husband though, and he says I’m insane, the brown ones are just called “chocolate sprinkles”. Luckily I don’t like them anyway, so I don’t usually have to worry about what I call them!

Lavender Fig Ice Cream on the Cape in Truro at Sweet Escape! By far the BEST homemde Ice Cream on Cape Cod! You will not believe the flavors…. Try the Cranberry Bog, Wicked Mudd Flats or Ryder Reach Rubble; My three favorites… and I have tried every place on the Cape (at least once… teehee)

I loved ice cream cookie sandwichs there the best!!! We call sprinkles ‘hundereds and thousands’ here in the UK.
