Don’t you hate it when you can’t get a new jar open and have to beg someone “stronger” to do it for you?
Beg no more! All you need is a bottle opener. Put it under the edge of the lid and lift just until the seal “pops.” Now your lid will twist right off without a hitch. And, yes, the lid will still screw back on no problem afterward.
And when your Go-To Lid Opener wonders why you haven’t asked for help in a while, just tell them you’ve been working out. 😉
(PS: Doesn’t my little Cate make a great hand model? Look out, J.P. Prewitt!)
That’s so funny you posted this, b/c last nite I felt like I looked the naked women on Sienfeld opening the jar of pickles (except for it was pasta sauce, and I wasn’t naked). It was NOT pretty! I finally had my husband open it. Not anymore!!
Also, thank you so much for your finance comment! It made my day!!
you can also use your rubber dish washing gloves! They really help grip the lid better.
cool, kate – thanks for sharing that!
so true, collette! I actually have a found rubber thing made specifically for taking of lids…and it works great, most of the time…the bottle opener ALWAYS works, which is good. 🙂
rubber gloves is genius! love those multi-taskers!
anne marie – your comment made me laugh…and you’re welcome for the comment! 🙂
you can get these special silicone moulds too for jar opening.they fit over the top in a cone like shape and help the grip, great if you can find them where you live.xx

Ever try opening the large jar (I mean the LARGE jar) of marinated artichoke hearts from Costco? The lid is too big/wide for the average hand to get a grip…by the way, who is the other “Collette” who spells her name just like mine?!
Oy my gosh! What a cutie pie little Cate is! Just adorable…
Great tips, Jane! I am going to try the cake strips soon also. I have some birthdays coming up, so it’s cake time!
I use this all the time. For some reason your blog hasn’t updated in my feeder for the longest time. I now know it was because you moved!
To the other Collette – I found Jane’s website through my sister in law Ruth (who I believe was friends with Jane in San Diego) I will sign as Lettie if I comment again to avoid confusion! 🙂
I like having multiple collettes…it keeps me on my toes! 🙂
hannah c – so glad you refound me – yea! 🙂
katelyn – thanks…I think cate’s pretty cute myself. 😉
I swear I’m going to have arthritis in my hands by the time I’m 35, so I need every jar-opening tip I can get!
This is going to change my life.
For the record…Nate wanted me to make sure I credited the source of this tip! It’s from my mother-in-law, Pat. Hopefully I haven’t caused any family riffs! 🙂
So, I have an additional tip that has NEVER failed for me. I just take the jar, and tap the edge of the lid on the floor a few times to break the seal. Since I have tile floor, I usually just tap it against one of the kitchen mats on the floor. I have never broken a jar – in case this seems dangerous to some!
He is such a great son!
