My Go-To Cookbooks…and a fabulous giveaway from Cook’s Illustrated!

Whenever I want to cook something I haven’t cooked before, I pull out three cookbooks: The Joy of Cooking, How to Cook Everything and The America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook. I look up the item in all three books, read through the recipes, then either just use one of them straight up (always to great success) or learn techniques from these books and do my own thing. I love these books. They never fail me. They have made me the cook I am today. They are my go-to cookbooks that I couldn’t live without!

Well, I’ve added a fourth book to the list. I didn’t think that would ever happen, but it has! The Cook’s Illustrated Cookbook has officially made it to my go-to cookbook list.

A few weeks ago I had the chance to meet with a few of the folks from America’s Test Kitchen, including Lori Galvin, executive editor in charge of books…i.e. she worked really hard on my new favorite cookbook. I had a lovely time chatting with them and am enamored with the test kitchens even more than I was before. (P.S. I totally want a job there. Constant taste testing. Heaven, right?)

Yesterday a big, heavy box arrived on my doorstep. I opened it and there was a note from Steph thanking me for spending the evening with them. The note was tucked inside my very own copy of The Cook’s Illustrated Cookbook. I immediately started reading through the book. This thing is AWESOME. Such a fantastic, trustworthy resource filled with wonderful, not-often-obvious tips. I am so happy to have this book!

Of course I asked if I could share a copy with you, and America’s Test Kitchen happily obliged! One of you will receive a copy of The Cook’s Illustrated Cookbook as well as a 1-year subscription to, yet another amazing cooking resource. All you need to do is add a comment to this post by Midnight PT on Monday, March 19. The randomly-selected winner will be announced on March 20.

Your comment can be anything, but if you want to make it interesting, share your favorite America’s Test Kitchen or Cook’s Illustrated recipe, or your favorite go-to cookbook(s)! We may as well share some good info with one another!

And if you’re looking for even more America’s Test Kitchen inspiration, be sure to check out The Feed. It’s really cool.

Good luck with the giveaway!

I love so many of their recipes it’s hard to pick just a few. This are the must have cookbooks. I love to pick up their magazine from Costco.

  169. 169

The Chicken Tikka Masala and Spaghetti al Limone from the magazine are in heavy rotation at my house. Mmmmmm.

  170. 170

I’d love a copy of this book! Their recipes are incredible.

  171. 171

I would love this cookbook. Right now my main sources are the joy of cooking, a recipe binder I have put togetherthroug the years and robin millers quick fix meals.

I don’t have a “go to” book really. So…I guess I need this one! I do like Everyday Food, however. It often have features on basic kitchen skills and recipes.

Oh, I’m going to have to get my hands on that Cook’s Illustrated cookbook, FOR SURE. I love America’s Test Kitchen so much. I used to DVR it and watch when I was up in the middle of the night with wee babies. My go-to cookbook is the Gourmet cookbook. 🙂

  175. 175

I would love this book! I love americas test kitchen! The joy of cooking is the best!

  176. 176

I love their recipes though even if I don’t win this new cookbook I should probably splurge and get it. It is not as convenient to troll through old issues of the magazine to find inspiration! I also often use simple J. Pepin recipes and D. Greenspan’s awesome Around My French Table, and for some more elaborate techniques I go to Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc At Home. Also, Balthazar and Marcella Hazan and older Chez Panisse ones. I am super excited to check out the new Nigel Slater “Tender” next.

  177. 177

Ahhh! I’d love another cookbook. The only one I own right now is a Williams Sonoma Chicken cookbook that I got for my birthday from a friend. And of course my binder o’ recipes, but I’m not sure how much that counts.

  178. 178

I have a Better Homes andGardens Illustrated Cookbook that is my go to cookbook. My husband gave it to me before we got married because he knew I liked cookbooks. After 25 years it is now filled with bookmarks of recipes I have made and the back cover has come off. I would LOVE this book to live with my other precious cookbooks.

  179. 179

The lemon cake recipe from Cooks Illustrated is my favorite, but I usually make it as cupcakes–instead of layering cake and lemon curd, I use the curd to fill the cupcakes, then cover the top with the icing.

Would love to own this perty cookbook. Regardless, love your blog, Jane.

I’ve been cooking with the “what’s in cupboard” method for so long that I’ve almost forgotten what it’s like to follow a recipe. Learning techniques is just what I need to do since I just recently rediscovered how to hard-boil an egg correctly!
