Friday Show and Tell: Butterfly in the Sky…

Happy Friday! We are finally home from our travels and back into a normal groove. It was a fabulous trip and we wouldn’t change a thing, but it is nice to be back in our own house again. I’m especially grateful for my down pillows. ūüėČ

I have just one thing to share today. Let’s start with a hint: Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high…

    reading rainbow is on netflix!

READING RAINBOW IS ON NETFLIX! Nate and I discovered this last night and the first thing I did with the kids this morning was put an episode on. Reading Rainbow is a show that I’ve always been sad my kids didn’t have to watch ‚Äď it ended right before Cate was born. PBS aired episodes until 2009, but I didn’t figure it out until it was too late and our DVR series recording never produced a thing!

My kids are watching the show as I type and all three of them are mesmerized, from age 3 to age 10! And, as a parent, I think the show is even better than I remember it.¬†I love its slower pace, how the show is educational while still fun, and that it’s filled with books, of course! I just wish that Netflix was¬†going to air all 21 seasons (right now they have a selection of episodes on service).

Also, in case you were wondering, I DO still have every word of the song memorized. Impressive, eh? (Okay, I think probably all of us do.)

    Happy Watching and Reading!

    Friday Show and Tell

    Happy Friday, Everybody!

Unbelievably our East coast visit is almost halfway done. Tomorrow morning we pack up the Sienna that Toyota has graciously lent us for the trip and head north to Cape Cod. We didn’t visit the Cape last year so we are very excited to get back!

scrotal recall, our new favorite netflix show!

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about TV. That’s just not right. I have a Netflix¬†show to recommend today that¬†is super funny and cute.¬†But first¬†you need to know that¬†the name is TERRIBLE in my opinion (and pretty much everyone’s opinion everywhere). Nate and I didn’t even consider watching it¬†just based on the name. But my friend Wendi texted to say we had to watch it, and I trust her, so we did, and it’s the best! Okay. Ready for the name of the show? Drumroll….Scrotal Recall. I KNOW. The name is just plain silly, but I’m telling you,¬†this show¬†is hysterical while¬†also endearing and sweet. (Definitely rated R, just so ya know!)

Two food links to share this week!

That’s it! You know the drill, share your stuff, too! Whether just a little something from your life, a favorite new show, a link to your blog, a new recipe to share, whatever! Share away!

    Friday Show and Tell

Happy Friday! It’s funny, usually weeks that start with a holiday feel short to me, but not this one…Friday couldn’t come soon¬†enough! ūüėČ

    virunga on netflix

I know I can’t stop talking about Africa (which is a reflection of my mind, which cannot stop thinking about Africa), but I have to share a documentary with you. Joe Kraus from ONE recommended the movie Virunga while we were driving around the Malawian countryside. Nate and I watched it this week and it is so beautifully made and thought provoking I had to let you all know about it. So many of the issues that I witnessed in Malawi are explored in this film, with the added complication of the war that Congo is experiencing. I literally sobbed my way through the movie (fair warning!).¬†The movie is streaming on Netflix. If you want to support Virunga National Park, click here.¬†Also, this article on Huffington Post¬†provides an excellent summary of the movie and what it’s all about.

    raspberry rhubarb sangria from @janemaynard

    Okay, food link time!

That’s it! As usual, please share your own stuff! Just updates from your life, recipes you’ve found during the week, links to your own blog posts…anything goes!

    Friday Show and Tell

Happy Friday, everyone! I have a lot to “show and tell” today and a lot to say about my trip to Africa (I’m getting on my first plane of the trip in 30 minutes!), so I decided to split the two up and I’ll be doing a separate Africa post later tonight from Washington, D.C. So, let’s show and tell, shall we?

    netflix chef's table from @janemaynard

First, I just discovered a new original documentary series on Netflix that I’m loving called¬†Chef’s Table. It tells the story of 6 of the world’s most renowned chefs and I love it. It’s beautifully constructed and the stories are wonderful. I highly recommend it!

"a bone to pick" by mark bittman

Mark Bittman has a new book¬†A Bone to Pick. I’ve ordered my copy and can’t wait to dig in. I love that guy and the way he talks about our food system. I am really looking forward to reading his latest thoughts!

    albion fit's soulstice retreat

Remember my friends Liz and Dave who started the activewear company Albion Fit? They just announced their retreat Soulstice and it looks AMAZING. It’s expensive, yes, but it really is a top notch, 5-star, every attendees gets a $1500 gift bag kind of experience. Albion is also offering a group discount if you are interested. Groups of 6+ can each register for $2399 (limited spaces available). Just click on the 6+ discount when you register and enter the code TWFD. And if you go¬†you just might run into me in a yoga class!

    serrano salsa by @janemaynard

Last thing, one food link for the week! I put together an awesome roundup of salsa recipes for Parade’s Community Table. You should definitely check it out!

That’s all! (Ha! That was a ton of stuff!) Happy Friday! And don’t forget to share your own finds, links, blog posts, thoughts, whatever!

    Friday Show and Tell

Happy Friday! I have a couple food links to share and a new TV show we’re loving!

Nate and I started watching Bloodline on Netflix this week and we’re loving it. In fact, last night when we had an episode of¬†The Americans waiting on our DVR, we chose¬†Bloodline instead. That’s saying something! Honestly, I think we gave it a shot because Coach Taylor is in it. Glad we did!

    strawberry mint fizz from @janemaynard

On Babble this week I created a recipe for Strawberry Mint Fizz, which is super tasty and refreshing. I wasn’t so sure about the strawberry mint combo, but it totally works, especially with a bit of cucumber thrown in. Delicious!

On Parade’s Community Table I put together a roundup of¬†Carrot Cake Inspired Desserts Perfect For Easter. They all look amazing!

Show and Tell time! Share your stuff!

Friday Show and Tell: So Much to Show, So Much to Tell!

I have THREE things to share today, all of them packed to the gill with great stuff.

First, ONE just launched their “Poverty is Sexist” campaign and I am so happy to help spread the word!¬†ONE shared a blog post to kick things off and there is also a petition you can sign¬†that calls on world leaders to put girls and women at the heart of the development agenda. They are over halfway to their goal for signatures, let’s help get the 100,000!

Sign ONE's "Poverty is Sexist" petition to world leaders #povertyissexist

ONE created a full report for this campaign, with great information and policy recommendations.¬†¬†Coming out around the same time, the Clinton Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation released their report on the status of women and girls in the world. Both reports are fascinating, somewhat depressing and simultaneously inspiring. We still have a long way to go, but we’ve come so far there is oodles of hope to tap into.

Second thing to share today: I got to talk to Tituss Burgess on the phone yesterday! Okay, so it was a conference call and there were other reporters on the call, but I still had the opportunity to gush and profess my love to Tituss, so it’s all good.¬†If you don’t know who Tituss Burgess is, that means you aren’t watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix. And, if that is the case, you need to remedy the situation immediately! Nate and I are loving the show and are almost done with the first season. Kimmy is¬†a lot like 30 Rock¬†(similar sense of humor, same quirky music, etc), only the characters are completely lovable, which in my opinion makes this show even better than 30 Rock.

¬†Tituss the actor who plays Titus the character was darling on the call and I want to adopt him. He talked about what it’s like being on a show that people can binge watch (i.e. it’s strange working for months and months on something that someone can watch in 1 day), that he loves the social commentary woven into the show and that that is where really great comedy is born, and that he is nothing like Titus the character (Tituss the actor is an introvert who HATES attention). Tituss also said that House of Cards is his obsession and that whenever a new season comes out he just orders take out for a few days to power through the episodes. The only reason Nate and I haven’t gotten to House of Cards ourselves is because we’ve been too busy watching Kimmy!

The third thing I want to share today is my weekly list of food links!

On Babble I did my monthly 3 Kids, a Mom & a Kitchen post. The kids and I made Cranberry-Orange Irish Soda Bread Buns and they were AWESOME. Cate said she wants me to serve them at her next birthday party. Definitely check the recipe out! It was also a great cooking project to do with the kids.

For Parade’s Community Table I had 2 posts this week!

That’s it! PHEW! Some weeks I have nothing to share, other weeks I’m bubbling over! As usual, everyone gets a turn at Show and Tell!¬†Share your own blog posts/finds/random-whatevers-you-want-to-share, tell us if you’re loving Kimmy Schmidt as much as I am, or let us know if you signed ONE’s petition to support women and girls!

    Friday Show and Tell

Happy Valentine’s Day! And, yes, Friday Show and Tell is happening on Saturday because the kids were home from school yesterday and we had a fun family day at the beach (sorry snowbound friends!). Anyway, here are a few things I wrote in other places this week:

homemade salt and pepper potato chips from @janemaynard

Let’s talk Netflix for a moment. We are really loving their original series and now there are too many to keep up! Nate and I just finished watching¬†The Fall. It was great, albeit disturbing. And the ending. Geesh!¬†It’s still a few weeks until the Underwoods return. Too bad the third season wasn’t up in time for Valentine’s Day like last year…it was such a romantic way to spend the holiday. ūüėČ I also just saw the preview for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Tina Fey’s new show on Netflix starring Ellie Kemper. It doesn’t come out until March…can’t wait! So much great TV, so little time!

I hope everyone has a chocolate-filled Valentine’s Day! And don’t forget to post your own stuff for Show and Tell!

    Friday Show and Tell

    Happy Friday!

5 shortbread recipes that are divine from @janemaynard

First off, you HAVE to go read my post on Babble this week where I share 5 shortbread recipe variations. Every last one of the flavors was divine. In addition, I have two fun holiday posts on Babble that I never shared here on the blog, so here you go!

Before I sign off, Nate and I have been watching The Walking Dead on Netflix¬†and went to bed last night after watching episode 8 of season 4 and all I have to say is…why are we torturing ourselves with this show?!?!?!? Good GOLLY. It’s just so good, we can’t stop!

Show and Tell means the whole class gets to share…show us what you’ve got this week!

    Happy New Year!

    Happy New Year!

We are in New Hampshire where it is very, very cold. But the kids are having a blast and, admittedly, it’s fun¬†to experience some winter weather this year ‚Äď it’s been a while!

sparkly blood orange basil mocktail from @janemaynard

I just wanted to share two quick New Years things with you today. First, I shared a recipe for a fun, sparkly mocktail (that can easily be turned into a cocktail, if you prefer!) on Babble this week. Be sure to check it out!

And, tonight, to party with the kids…many, many hours before midnight!

Have a Happy New Year and see you on the other side!

    Friday Show and Tell

Happy Friday! I think I might actually be done with Christmas decorating. Normally I get it done in 1 day, but this year it’s been 1 week! It’s kind of been fun stretching it out, though. The kids just need to finish the tree and I need to decide which wreath to hang above our fireplace. I am the most indecisive person you’ll ever meet, so please help and tell me which wreath is your favorite!

Option 1: White wreath that is super cool and unique and that I am in love with. I like how it contrasts with the green wall and ties in with the white shelves and mantel. It’s a little smaller in diameter than option 2 and ¬†doesn’t fill the space¬†quite as well.

    white christmas wreath

Option 2:¬†Red berry wreath that is perfectly Christmasy against the green wall and just seems to fit in the room. It makes less of a statement but is a bit bigger. I really like this one, but I’m not in love, but I wonder if it isn’t better for this space.

    red christmas wreath

Now that the decorations are almost done, it’s time to watch some Christmas movies. I started browsing Netflix to find some Christmas movies to watch with the kids and stumbled on¬†One Magic Christmas. I remember¬†looooooving that movie as a kid. I’ll have to see if my kids are equally as enthralled. I was always a sucker for high drama and mysticism as a kid, but don’t know that my kids are like that. Should be interesting…

I have two posts on Babble to share with you this week:

You know the drill, Show and Tell is for everyone, so please share your stuff! And please chime in on the wreath!
