Perfect Chocolate Chips for Your Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies

Since I shared my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe with you, I figured I might as well divulge all of my secrets and share my favorite chocolate chips. I discovered Guittard’s Super Cookie Chips recently at Draeger’s (a fancy, dancy grocery store in Menlo Park, CA).

These Super Cookie Chips are great! First, they have the flat, disc shape that the New York Times cookie article talks about…it really is an ingenius idea using a disc shaped “chip” in the cookie.Β  You end up with layers of chocolate throughout the entire cookie. Second, Guittard’s chocolate quality is just so good. I don’t really like eating chocolate chips alone…but I’ll gobble these puppies up no problem.

The New York Times recipe suggests the following chocolates, which I’m sure are equally as delicious.Β  “Disks are sold at Jacques Torres Chocolate; Valrhona fèves, oval-shaped chocolate pieces, are at Whole Foods.” Regardless of which brand you use, I am loving the disc shaped chocolate, it’s heaven in a chocolate chip cookie.

I love that the bag describes them as “meltier.” I didn’t know meltier was a word, but now I’m definitely going to start using it.

I absolutely ADORE Valrhona chocolate. I have actually visited it in France and wanted to buy the entire store, mais helas, no such luck. Each year I buy a bunch of Valrhona online for Christmas. Lucky me!!

  4. Guittard are my favorite, but I haven’t been able to find them in New Mexico. πŸ™

I love Guittard chocolate too! My fav. Have you tried Scharffen Berger? They have a small factory (And give tours, yum!) in Oakland or Berkeley. πŸ™‚

  6. My favorite chocolates are from Guittard, too. I even love them more than Scharffen Berger chocolates. So, I’m very excited about these disks! I’ve yet to see them in the stores I frequent, but I’m going to start looking for them. Thanks for posting this.

LOVE scharffen berger. I have some of their chocolate chunks in the cupboard waiting for a batch of cookies to be made. πŸ™‚

Are these disks larger in size in comparison to regular chocolate chips?

    • Jane Maynard

yes, they are definitely larger…flatter, but for sure wider than a regular chip. I need to go buy some more, it’s been a while since I”Ve had them and they are SO GOOD! πŸ™‚

I’ll be 100% honest with you. I’ve been making these Super Cookie Chips Cookies for at least 2 decades. This recipe has RockStar status in my life. I was the Blood Drive Chairperson for all of Kelly AFB in San Antonio TX for years before it was closed. My Directorate did awesome in getting so many donors every time we had a drive. The reason is because I would make a wagon-load of these cookies and I was not above bribing people to come in to donate. It worked each and every time. My own single batch of these cookies is actually 3 batches put together. For the last 6-7 years I was unable to find the Guittard Super Cookie Chips at my grocery store and thought they may have stopped making them. I just saw them again this Christmas season and started buying them. I personally use pecans instead of walnuts, but that’s just the way we roll in Texas (our state nut).

    • It’s funny, I’ve had a hard time finding the chips myself the last few years…and now they are popping up in stores again. it makes me SO happy! they really are the best! πŸ™‚
