One of the very best features of our new house is the back patio. The landscaping in the yard is beautiful, complete with lighting at night, and the patio is large with a beautiful pergola, from which I will be hanging twinkle lights.
Ever day I count my lucky stars that we ended up getting this home. The previous owner lived here forever and took such good care of the home, looking out for every detail. Once such detail that we discovered a week or two after moving in was the gas line wired out to the patio. How cool is that?
The gas line comes up on the left side of the patio, near the post you see on the left in this photo.
I never thought a gas line could look so beautiful, but it does!
Over the next few months we are going to be working with Lowe’s to put in a grill and an outdoor shower in our fabulous new yard. We have started the planning process and I am really itching to get the grill installed!
I started browsing the Lowe’s website yesterday to see what’s available before we hit the store, and I honestly felt a bit overwhelmed. I figure if I feel overwhelmed, other people must, too! And I know that some of you have knowledge and opinions about gas grills that would be very beneficial for the clueless ones among us.
So, we’re doing a Call for Recipes, except there are no recipes involved! Today we are calling for your tips and advice when shopping for a gas grill! Which features are “must-have” and which are not so important? What do you love most about your grill? What do you hate most about your grill? I absolutely LOVE my weber grill–heavy duty. The one thing I would change is the direction the burners go; mine are side to side (longways) and I wish they were top to bottom. The reason why is that it is impossible to do indirect heat cooking on mine or just to turn on half bc I’m not grilling that much.

I know everyone says to go with Weber but we recently bought the Charbroil Infrared from Lowes, and we LOVE it. Talk to someone at Lowes about TRU-Infrared to help you understand the benefits; but to sum it up, you never have flare ups with the Infrared. It helps distribute the heat better which eliminates the hot & cold spots and I never have to worry about flames getting out of control, because I have NEVER had a flare up.
Congrats on the house, we just got a new house also and were so excited with the gas hook-up on the patio; yay to SoCal outdoor living! Hope you Enjoy!
We have a Perfect Flame. My hubby got it on clearance at Lowes about four years ago. Love, love, love it. It is so easy to use. My favorite part are the drawers where I store all my bbq tongs and such.
Our Weber is 17 years old and still works great. At the time, we upgraded with a side burner. We have not ever used the burner so I don’t think that’s necessary. Our grill is on the deck right next to our kitchen though.
I love the rotisserie attachment we have for our grill. I’ve made many Thanksgiving turkeys on it, not to mention chickens and pork roasts.
I’ve never used my side burner; not once. I agree wtih Lisa that the three separate back to front burners are better than the side to side. I have found over the last 20+ years that grills, whether the burners, the grates or whatever rust and fall apart over the course of 3-4 years and I have to replace the whole thing. Ours sits on a covered porch, so it’s not completely out in the elements non-stop. So my bottom line advice is buy one that isnt too expensive, becuase you’ll end up having to replace it before too long anyway.
+1 for Weber, we’re looking for a new one next summer–as our Ohio grilling season is about to end shortly 🙁
I’m looking at the Weber ones with a Sear burner, we decided against the Infared grills after reading too many negative reviews, glad it worked for above poster, but I don’t think it would fit our needs.
Doing research the past month I’ve basically read (from a variety of sources, certainly there will be others that disagree) that if you spend less than $500 don’t expect much longer than 3 years from a gas grill; $500-700, 3-7 years; and $700 above, a good decade. I feel this is a case where a decent investment pays off.
Also, check the stainless steel quality, some are total junk. Feel free to send Lowe’s my way too!! haha 😉
Weber all the way. Don’t sacrifice quality for a few bucks.

I don’t have any advice for the grill since that’s my husbands “job” cuz I’m afraid of turning on the BBQ. Haha! (it could explode or something, right??) But, I do think that if you can swing it, you should have a fire pit built in addition to your BBQ. We have both and we totally love having a fire pit! We always have ingredients on hand to make s’mores whenever we want. Our friends and neighbors know this, so we always have people stopping by for a treat. It’s been great too as our kids have gotten older because their friends love to hang out by it and just talk. So, I vote for a fire pit! 🙂
