This Kitchen Tip Will BLOW YOUR MIND and Give You the Power to Tackle Any Plastic Wrap or Foil In Your Path

Nate’s Aunt Linda shared today’s kitchen tip with me last week on the Cape. She saw it on Facebook recently and everyone she’s shared it with since has had the same reaction I did: “DUH! How did I not know that?!?!”

Are you ready for this life-changing, super simple, we-all-should-already-know-this kitchen tip?

You know how when you need to dispense aluminum foil or plastic wrap from the box you kind of have to hold the lid closed just the right amount so that you can still pull the plastic or foil without pulling out the whole roll and it’s always kind of finicky and annoying? (I think Virginia Woolf would be very proud of that amazing run-on question. 10 points for liberal arts majors!)

Okay, look at the ends of the box and you’ll notice a little spot that says something like “Press here to lock roll” or “Push tab” or something like that. Guess what? You just have to push those tabs in on both ends and that holds the roll in the box for you. VOILA! No more battling the roll! I’m thinking these tabs have probably been around FOREVER.

How many of you already knew about these handy tabs? How many of you were just as clueless as the rest of us?

You better believe I’ve pushed all the tabs in on my boxes!

Happy Rolling!

  1. What?! I refuse to believe those always have been there!!

  2. 2

No offense meant to anyone, but I don’t understand how people didn’t know those were there. I can’t say I’ve “always” known but I’m 32 years old and have known about them long enough that I can’t remember how long. lol. However, I don’t use them. I’ve never had the need for them. My problem isn’t with getting the foil and plastic wrap out of the box….it’s stopping the plastic wrap from sticking to itself once I have it out. lol

    Absolutely clueless – DUH!!!!

  4. 4

I have always known about the tab, I am ashamed to said I don’t use it though! I don’t know why, guess I like to frustrate myself!

I have never seen those tabs before in my life. I am sure they just put them in last week, LOL!! Thank you for the great tip!

For as long as I can remember those have been there!! 🙂 My favorite saran wrap has been from Costco where there is a little plastic zip thing where it cuts it for you so you don’t have to even whip it off. 🙂

I knew the tabs were there but I didn’t realize they were at BOTH ends. I would push only one end and nothing would happen. I never figured out why. Now I know. Thanks Linda.

  8. Wow….trippin’ !!! I never knew they were there! Shouldn’t this be part of a commercial or something? 🙂

  9. Awwww! They’re so cute when they figure things out on their own! 🙂 That’s one of those mind-blowing life hacks.

Oh.My.Word. I have always been aware of those tabs, yet never really understood what they meant. Secure the roll? Secure it where? How did this never make sense before you pointed it out? I even graduated college with honors and this is probably one of the biggest “DUH” moments I’ve ever had. How embarrassing!! So glad I read your blog… 😛

Look on the front of the Reynolds Foil box there are slots that will hold the cover closed too!

What?!!! This IS blowing my mind! Thanks, Jane!

Its not the roll staying in place that i always have the issue with. It is the flimsy tops that hold the cutting edge. I recently purchased an “as seen on t.v.” product called Wraptastic. It is a heavy duty plastic box with a recessed edge that all you need to do is press down to cut the plastic, foil, or wax paper. It is only a fraction bigger than a normal size box of any of these products but fits perfectly in my shallow, narrow drawer for such items. I dont normally fall for these products but have been so frustrated lately that I would try ANYTHING!!! It works like a charm and is affordable.

Wow…I was definitely clueless. Heading to my pantry now to start pressing the ends of all my boxes 🙂

I had no idea those were there.
