Week 217 Menu…and…Some News!

I have something to tell you. And, surprisingly, I’ve kept it a secret for weeks and weeks and weeks. Which is not an easy thing for me to do! Some of you suspected something was up after this post. It was funny, because I actually did have your run-of-the-mill cold that week. BUT…I was also not feeling well for another big reason, and those of you with suspicions were right on! We’re expecting Baby #3 in September! I’m officially done with the first trimester and everything is looking good, so I can finally spill the beans! Yea!

Our friend Ellen Patton sent us one of her completely adorable photo cards when she heard the news.

My body doesn’t enjoy the first 18 weeks or so of pregnancy (that may be the understatement of the century). I am oh-so-sick even on medication, which I was expecting, but it’s still no fun…for anyone in our family. And keeping up a food blog has been more than challenging the last 10 weeks or so. In fact, remember the Norwegian Salmon post? Confession: I didn’t actually cook a darn thing on that plate! My friend Nikki, presented as my cooking partner in the post, was in fact the executive chef. I didn’t have to smell fish and just got to show up to take pictures of the final product. Nikki got to keep a whole salmon. Everyone was happy!

Despite feeling beyond terrible, I am also feeling beyond grateful and excited for this blessing in our life! And, yes, we’ll find out what this little person is…on April 18, to be exact. Stay tuned!

I should feel more normal again in about a month. Until then, I’ll just keep planning menus in the hopes that at least a few of the things I plan get made!

MONDAY:
Chicken Piccata
– Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Baby Broccoli (both veggies from our CSA bag)

TUESDAY:
Corn Chowder

WEDNESDAY:
Stuffed Peppers (we didn’t have these last week, big surprise, but they sound so good…hoping I can do it this week!)

THURSDAY:
– Leftovers

FRIDAY:
– Eat out

SATURDAY:
– Spaghetti with meat sauce

SUNDAY:
– Pancakes
– Smoothies

Bring on the menus, folks! And have a wonderful week!

Congratulations!!! I don’t know how you kept up with the blog so well! I’m expecting my first (due in July) and for my first trimester I actually couldn’t go near your blog. The beautiful food pictures that I normally LOVE were turning my stomach so bad! I’m really glad I can appreciate good food again! Hope you feel better soon! Very excited for you!!!

    • Jane Maynard

I edit the website FoodPress.com – there were a few days where it was everything I could do to pick features, and one morning I sat down to email the people who were featured and I could not even look at the screen. I totally know how you felt!!! 🙂 congrats on your first…enjoy every second, every single pregnancy and child is amazing, but there is something magical and special about that first 🙂

  9. Oh my goodness – Congratulations!! That is such exciting news! You have such an adorable family. I actually have been thinking alot about your family lately (not just your kids and husband – but your Wallin family) because I have been reading Shakespeare from the complete works your dad gave me like 10 years ago. I just wanted to let you know how much I love your family – they are all great!

    • Jane Maynard

awww, shantel, what a sweet message. thank you! and I’ll have to make sure the wallins see it, too! 🙂

  10. Congratulations, though are you ready for a third critic?

Sunday: Breakfast (Long Island style egg sandwiches and hash browns)
Monday: Chicken gyros with homemade tzatziki that is currently chilling

Thursday: Weather looking up, so we might grill a pork tenderloin. If not, chili is in the freezer and can be defrosted quick.
    Friday: Out.
Saturday: We’ll see how the muse strikes me, but it looks like we’ll have the in-laws over for dinner. Shrimp scampi, maybe, or chicken parm with some pasta will likely work.

    • Jane Maynard

I am not ready for a third critic, no! hoping they just eat whatever I put in front of them. ha! 🙂

  11. Oh yay! Congratulations! I am expecting our 1st in September too (Sep 4th), and although I am lucky to be feeling great, I am just oh so tired. My blog has fallen because of it – I just can’t cook lately or stay awake to write about it, hence we have been eating so randomly these last 16 weeks or so (my poor husband)! I am thankful for your continued inspiration. Hope you start feeling well soon! So exciting!

    Vicki

Congratulations & OH how I feel your preggie sickness misery!! I lived on Zofran (ondansetron is the generic) for the last half of my 1st preg. & the entire way through with my 2nd preg. A miracle drug for me, otherwise I would be suffering big-time. I hope it all goes well for you!

No menu from me yet – I’m working on being diligent to use up what’s in the pantry & fridge before making a run to the store. It’s a challenge!! But I’m hoping my grocery budget (& hubby) will thank me for it later!!

    • Jane Maynard

I don’t know what I would do without zofran. seriously. I mean, I’m still sick, but at least I can eat and i’m gaining weight. and I can sort of get things done…it’s a miracle drug for me too!

First of all – Jane, congrats on your new lil bundle!!

I was diagnosed with diabetes last fall. I’ve gone through most of the stages of loss – bargaining, anger, denial… and finally acceptance. This week, we are beginning phase one of the south beach diet. It’s the only way I know to get my blood glucose levels under control, and find out which foods negatively affect me. Here goes…

Sun – (last carb dinner & fiance’s request) Homemade meatballs w/ linguini
    Mon – Five-spice chicken w/ salad
Tue – Chimichurri Burgers w/ veggies
Wed – Jerk Chicken w/ Romaine salad

    Tamara

Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! Yesterday, my husband and I were just looking at baby photos of our two (now 4 and 6). It brought back so many great memories. We looked at each other and asked “would you want to do it again?” and the answer was no. 🙂 We couldn’t bear the thought of being outnumbered. I always wanted three kids though. So, I’ll live vicariously though others like you, who are much braver than me.

Sunday – grilled pork chops, fresh fruit salad, mixed greens (our first meal of the year eating on the deck!)
Monday – Your butternut squash, cauliflower and leek soup with crusty bread
    Tuesday – pancakes and smoothies
Wednesday – Overnight adventure for spring break – eat out

Congrats, Jane & family! I had to take Zofran with my first pregnancy (daughter) and that was in 1997-98; I was so, so sick for about 16 weeks. My son was easy-breezy so maybe you’re having another girl. 🙂

Sunday — chicken noodle soup, biscuits & chocolate croissant bread pudding (it rained all day here in So. Cal.)
Monday — Rueben sandwiches (with leftover corned beef from last week) and fresh oven-fries.
Tuesday — meal from the freezer (baked Ziti) as my son has a baseball game.
Wednesday — soup & salad at church; our weekly Lenten tradition.
Thursday — leftover chicken noodle soup
Friday — pan-fried cod in a cornmeal crust (sides TBD)
    Saturday — eat out!

Have a great week and stay away from anything FOUL smelling!

Congrats! As far as having little foodies goes, I seem to have become progressively worse with each of my 3 children. Whilst my first (now 8 yrs) is happy to try most things, my second (5 yrs) sticks to the tried-and-tested plain pasta with carrot sticks, and the less said about my soon-to-be 4-yr-old’s dietary habits, the better! Fingers crossed you’re more successful with your three (and do pass on the secret of creating child gourmets, if you ever find it!).

  62. Jane, Congrats!! I’m just rounding out the end of my sickly first trimester. So happy for you.

Yay for you, Jane. Babies are lovely and I wish you all the best.

I have arguing with myself about my menu for the last couple days. I have many things in the freezer and pantry which should be used and I am trying to resist the urge to buy more groceries and/or go pick up premade items at Costco or Trader Joe’s since several of our evenings are very busy. So, although I have planned on cooking this week, I may scrap it if things get crazy and hit Subway!

    Sun: Hamburgers and oven fries
Mon: Chili from freezer, salad, bread
Tues: Swedish meatballs from freezer, mashed potatoes, green beans
Weds: Chicken & Veg curry, rice

How exciting and congratualtions.
I, personally, want 4 but only have hubby convinced to three. I’m down to just a few days and so excited for #2, but I have been absent from menus lately due to the prep work leading up to this point. Lots of cleaning! Hi Jane, this is my first time posting. I have been “borrowing” ideas for some time now! Congrats on Baby! I have three girls under the age of 5. It is so much fun. I hope you start to feel better soon. Nothing worse than feeling bad all of the time. Thanks for the awesome blog!

Monday: Dinner at Lifetime Fitness (Liv has swimming lessons)
Tuesday: Baked Manicotti Bundles. This is a first time recipe, so I will let you know if it’s worth making again. I got it from Clean Eating Magazine.
Wednesday: Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry with Brown rice. This is another first. Will let you know how it goes.
Thursday: I am going out to celebrate a friend’s baby. Left Overs for the home crowd.
Friday: Chicken with Italian Sweet and Sour Fennel . For a side I am making creamy polenta and steamed green beans.
Saturday: I am going to Richmond to a craft show. It will be a free for all here:))
Sunday: Grilled Chicken Breasts and Pappardelle with Baby Spinach, Herbs and Ricotta

  84. Congratulations Jane – hope you are beginning to feel better! I have been cleaning out our freezer and making meals from what I find, so my meal planning has been on hiatus for a few weeks. I will have to get back to planning soon. Meanwhile, we are hoping to travel soon to bring our fourth child home – we are adopting from Taiwan. Our third child was adopted from Taiwan and we learned in November he has a little brother, so we are in the process of adopting him now. With four kiddos, I am going to have to stay on top of my meal-planning!

    • Jane Maynard

congratulations to you, too! that’s wonderful that you are able to adopt her brother!!

      thanks for the congrats!
