Week 220 Menu

I love pears, especially Bartlett and Comice. Mmmmm. But I have a problem with pears. I’ll see them at the store, crave them, buy a bunch, bring them home and place them in the fruit bowl to ripen. And then, nine times out of ten, I forget about them until they are far too ripe for eating. It’s tragic. Yesterday, I decided to photograph the pretty little Bartlett pear sitting in my fruit bowl. And then, believe it or not, I cut it up and ate it. And it wasn’t even mushy. I consider this a miracle pear!

Well, our menu this past week ended up looking nothing like what I planned. One of these days things will get back to normal. I’m 17 weeks pregnant, after all! Honestly, though, last week was the best week yet. Still not out of the woods on this sickness nonsense, but I think we’re getting there! So, let’s see if I can’t actually follow my menu plan this week…even just a little!

MONDAY:
Paninis of some sort (probably caprese, but maybe chicken with spinach, avocado, tomato and honey mustard)
– Fruit

TUESDAY:
Green Noodles

WEDNESDAY:
– Pulled pork sandwiches (using this sauce recipe, but I’ll use it with the smoked pulled pork from Costco)

THURSDAY:
– Leftovers

FRIDAY:
– Eat out

SATURDAY:
– Eat out. I’m just going to be realistic and plan on two eating out nights. But hopefully I’ll feel better and rustle up another meal instead!

SUNDAY:
Waffles

Your turn! Bring on the menus!!!

I was hoping to grill this week, but the weather looks kind of blah in Upstate New York.

I did chicken with leeks this week on a whim and it came out awe-some!

I think it’s the time of year for even the best laid plans to be jumbled up, sickness or not! Spring time always seems more hectic and improvisational to me. After the sickness passes (soon!?) maybe you could pull the energy to turn those past-prime pears into chutney.
I use equal parts sugar and rice vinegar, a bit of grated ginger root, dry ginger, and crushed pink pepper (pink pepper is a key flavor; sweet, fruity and lightly floral). Its great on chicken!

As far as a menu for this week….yeesh! I’ll be cleaning out the fridge with my meals, so my produce doesn’t end up like your pears-useless!

    Ideas:
    chicken, mashed potatoes, swiss chard
Portobella burgers with avocado, or guacamole Jane-style.
Spanish rice and bean with leftover avo/guac.
Pasta with all kinds of veggies- carrot, tomato, fennel, onion, spinach, chard.
Spinach salad with caramelized fennel, honey figs, nuts, veggies that need to be used.
Soup (that has been in the fridge for a bit) and Jane’s skillet biscuit bread.
“Reuben” Style Sandwich- I call practically any hot, toasty meat/kraut or slaw/cheese sandwich a reuben, and I know its wrong. Mine will be on spelt bread with ham, kraut, and russian dressing, skip the cheese.

Well…I suppose my ideas turned into a menu. I’ll just pick from the list each day. 🙂

With blustery Autumnal weather hitting in south-eastern Australia at the moment, I’ve planned some cockle-warming dishes because of the chilly conditions for the week to come (is that weird that I check the weather forecast to plan my menu? If you do attempt Chicken Tikka, try Jamie Oliver’s recipe. We did it last week and it was a huge hit with our whole family, even the 2-year-old. I accompanied it with spiced basmati rice, mango lassis, and homemade potato and pea samosas — baked, not fried. It went over so well that my husband is already bugging me to do another Indian night!
