Week 221 Menu

First off, I’m addicted to Yorkshire Pudding. Addicted, I tell ya. Plus, they re-heat so well. 1 minute in the microwave, then a minute or two in the toaster oven to crisp them up. Heaven.

Secondly, thank you all for your absolutely wonderful Kitchen Disaster stories this week. And, please, pretty please go read through my list of favorites. It’s a perfect weekend read…or anytime read, really. My mom told me yesterday she actually read every single comment and was dying laughing the whole time. I put that handy dandy list together for you assuming you might not be as crazy as my mom and me to sit down and read a bazillion comments.

Thirdly, my in-laws are coming to visit this week. WOO-HOOOOO!!! People don’t believe me when I say I love my in-laws. I really do. I could live with them. Seriously. When we planned their trip, we didn’t realize that they fly home Easter morning (whoops!), so we’re having our Easter celebrations on Saturday. We’ll be writing a little note to the Easter Bunny to see if he/she/it can come a day early. I hope he/she/it will oblige!

– Pulled chicken sandwiches (in the freezer)
– Coleslaw

– Driving to Yosemite, so restaurant eating

– Driving home from Yosemite, more restaurant eating

Asian Spinach Salad
Roasted cauliflower with green garlic

– Ham, probably, but will decide with Pat (mi madre-in-law) when they get here
Sliced roasted golden beets with spinach and goat cheese salad
– Sugar Snap Peas
– Homemade rolls
Funeral Potatoes (if we go with ham, that is), or maybe twice-baked potatoes if we have some sort of other meat
– Dessert – I think we’ll be making Easter cookies or mini cupcakes or something fun to decorate with “Mimi”

– Leftovers! Which makes for a nice, relaxing Easter for me!

Handy reminder: If you’re dying eggs this coming weekend, remember to buy them early this week! Older eggs that are boiled peel much better than super fresh eggs. Harold McGee says so. Plus, if the store runs out, you’ll be all set. 😉

Pregnancy update: Sickness is abating. I only had to take my medicine 3 times this week. We’re almost back to normal! AND…we find out in two days if the baby is a boy or girl! Now’s the time to place your bets!

    I love yorkshire pudding too! I use muffin tins when I do them, and they get super puffy if the batter is room temp.
    I’m not sure yet what our menu plan will be this week, probably pretty simple because we’re going out of town to visit my parents for Easter so I won’t need to plan for those days (yay!). I wanted to make Easter cake pops but not sure we’ll have time.

  4. Somehow, I missed the call for kitchen disasters stories. I once fell asleep while making a pot of chicken noodle soup. I tossed some egg noodles in the soup and left it on stove to cook for dinner. I had timed it perfectly to when The Wife was supposed to arrive. She gets home and finds me asleep, so she sits down for a nap. Three hours later, we both awake. The noodles were cooked alright. They superexpanded then fused themselves to the bottom of the stockpot. Ended up with pizza for dinner and 90 minutes of me and a putty knife scraping burned noodles. Disgusting.

    Sunday: Homemade pizzas — spinach; portabellas, goat cheese and caramelized shallots; sausage; pizza margherita.
    Monday: Penne with chicken, portabellas and goat cheese
    Tuesday: Cream of tomato and quinoa soup (

    Friday: Out
    Saturday: Pizza before everyone else goes to Easter vigil.

    Hey! I know my odds are 50/50, but I had a hard time deciding whether to vote girl or boy. My final decision is (drum roll, please): Girl! My parents had three girls, so it just seemed to fit. As for my menu this week, we’ve got a lot of planned events going on:

    Sunday: Cook out at a friend’s house. I’m bringing pesto & cheese tortellini salad and an appetizer that is still tbd.

    Monday: Speghetti (w/tofu), salad, french bread

    Tues: Leftovers

    Wednesday: Leftovers?

    Thursday: having friends over: pulled pork bbq, baked mac & cheese, red cabbage & green apple slaw, deviled eggs, cookies & cream fudge.

    Friday: Dinner at a friend’s. I’m bringing a side and an appetizer still tbd.

    Sat: Leftovers

    Sunday: Family Easter potluck – not sure what I’ll be bringing, we haven’t had the fight…er, made the decision yet on who gets to bring what.

    I just sent a menu to my sister who has three kids and works full time. She lives hundreds of miles away from me but I figured I could try to help her out in the meal planning department. My mom watches her kids during the day sometimes and they usually just stay for dinner on those nights. Here it is…

    Mon: turkey meatloaf (barefoot contessa), mashed potatoes, green beans
    Tue: dinner at grandma’s house
    Wed: breakfast for dinner–waffles with strawberries or blueberries, turkey sausage patties
    Thu: dinner at grandma’s house
    Fri: dinner at grandma’s house
    Sat: order pizza or make pasta with peas and ricotta (recipe on this site–thanks!)
    Sun: lunch/dinner at grandma’s house for easter

    Grandma’s got a lot work to do this week!

    Phew! I don’t know what work will look like this week, so i may change days for some!

    Monday-Whew! After a weekend in a professional kitchen, Mondays are usually gone by the wayside. I’ll manage to feed myself!
    Tuesday-Running with my sister after work, and then to our fave sub shop (buy one get one free coupon is prompting us to go since we haven’t in awhile). 🙂
    Wednesday-Artichokes with clarified butter…with…something?
    Thursday-TOMS Pizza! (Tomatoes, onion, mushroom, spicy sausage) Maybe some spinach and fennel, too.
    Friday-Fritatta or quiche using some veggies mentioned + swiss +ham (staples for lunch sandwiches)
    Saturday-Yorkshire pudding! I can’t wait! I’m going to see if this will work with a thick soup I made in place of bread/rolls/biscuit (after all, it was intended to be consumed with beef and gravy!). If I don’t like it with my soup, it’ll get some red currant jam and be dessert!
    Sunday-BIG Easter brunch….That I’ll be cooking at work. I’ll be visiting my family in the evening for leftovers!

    I’ve got a bunch of cilantro and mint i need to use up. Any suggestions? I’ve made so much guac, rice/beans, “mexican” that I’m sick of it! I’m thinking I’ll pick and freeze the cilantro. As for the mint….?

    The weather is warm one day, cold the next, warm, cold – tough to figure out if it should be a soup night or a BBQ night! Thx for the tip about boiling eggs & glad to hear the sickness is subsiding!

    I’m going to guess that it’s a Boy. Just mix things up a little at your house.

    I made your Puffed Oven Pancakes this morning and as they were baking in the oven I read your recipe post more carefully and saw the Yorkshire Pudding update. Luckily they were still delicious (as always) but we’ll have to try the “pudding” soon since you’re obviously a HUGE fan.

    We’re just keeping it simple around here this week.

    The family is heading to Tasmania for two weeks holidays – can’t wait! Look forward to catching up on all the menu’s when we return.

    I think the weather is on the upswing here in Northern Virginia! We have had so much rain. Can’t wait for warmer weather. So proud of myself, actually stuck to the menu last week!     We are getting ready for our yearly pilgrimage to UT on Saturday, so this week is mostly eating what’s in the fridge. Though we get the added challenge of family wide colds, and an infant who appears to be allergic to milk.

    Hello Jane,
    I lurk on your site, but usually don’t comment. I am also an American not of British descent. I have lived in England for 10 years now. Yorkshire pudding is great. Kids love it. I want to give you a link to a proper yorkshire pudding recipe by Delia Smith (the doyenne of modern English cooking.) I think you’ll like it, and her site might even give you some totally new inspiration if you nose around a bit.
