Hello! I think I just might be ready to get back in the groove! Our house is still a mess of paper, boxes and piles, but we’re getting there!
This morning I discovered that the dishwasher is basically useless. {Insert sarcastic “Yay!”} Cate and I rewashed and dried everything and had a nice time together. I don’t know if or when the dishwasher issue will be resolved, so I think we have a lot of dishwashing in our future.
I am a firm believer in using beautiful things. For example, the cutting board that I bought at the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Part of me wants to set it aside, put it on display, never let a knife hit its surface. But it is a cutting board, you’re supposed to cut on it! And because it is so beautiful, that elevates the everyday, mundane task of cutting things up. Even daily tasks can be beautiful and inspiring when looked at in the right light.
I have been hiding away a stack of embroidered dishtowels that my grandma gave us when we got married. Embroidered dishtowels were her standard wedding gift and heaven only knows how many towels she embroidered over the years. This morning when I discovered we would be washing a lot of dishes, I decided to take these special towels out of the linen drawer. I took photos of each towel in their white, pristine state. And then I officially put them into the regular dishtowel rotation. I’m going to enjoy the towels, look at them everyday instead of once every few years when I reorganize the linens. I’m going to think of my grandma every time we use the towels. And I’m going to create memories with my children. These towels will become a part of my children’s history, just as the towels my own mother received on her wedding day are a part of my history and memories of childhood. These cute, embroidered duckies will forever remind my kids of hours spent washing, drying, talking and getting to know one another better over the kitchen sink.

I love those towels! My husbands grandmother would make us hand made items each Christmas (my idea, because previous to that she was giving us money!). One year she gave us a Christmas tree skirt, one year felt ornaments, etc. for our wedding we got quilts and for each child she made quilts or a crochet blanket- my favorite things!

love those dish towels I had a set also but lost them in the move 12 years ago. Threw away the wrong box of items so sad once I realized 🙁 Create wonderful memories! I hand wash my dishes most of the time it’s relaxing to me (I’m weird for thinking that right?)

I know it looks like we are not eating any meat. I’m 60/40 vegetarian/vegan. So everything is made that way and then I add meat at the end after I get out my portions. It’s just easier that way. So the meat is decided on the fly. 🙂 It works for us.
I love that you voluntarily handwash your dishes…I’m going to channel your energy so I find it relaxing, too 😉
I like your approach to meat – great idea! I like to cut back on meat as much as I can, this is a good approach
Sunday: HOmemade calzones and homemade ceaser salad….yummy
Monday: Chicken fajitas..I cheat, I cut chicken into strips, toss with taco seasoning and fry up in a pan with Pam..avocado, rice, lettuce and olives
Tuesday: Meatball heroes and leftover ceaser salad. If you freeze the dressing it does not separate. I make a few pounds of meatballs at once and freeze them for quick dinners, cheaper than take-out and if you are going to cook one batch you may was well cook 3
Wednesday: Green curry chicken made with TJ’s simmer sauce, rice, green beans, may do something to the green beans to make them taste fancy…getting tired of same old green beans.
Thursday: Dijon pork chops, roasted potatoes, steamed carrots
Friday: either leftovers or a shrimp thai soup from my Trader Joe’s cookbook that I didn’t get to make last week.
Weekends are always up in the air…
I hope all goes well with the unpacking and settling into your new home and routines. Bummer about the dishwasher. Here’s our menu this week:
