One fun thing about moving back to a place is having access once again to food that you once bid adieu. Yesterday we were treated with two of our San Diego favorites. First, our friend Nikki brought us her 2012 box of Christmas goodies, which she had stored in the freezer. Nikki makes the best holiday treats of anyone anywhere, no doubt, so I was very happy when she knocked on my door with a cute red and white box in hand! Second, we had dinner at Phil’s BBQ. Oh, Phil, how we’ve missed you!
A couple repeats from last week, not because I was a slacker (amazingly!) but because of unexpected dinners with friends. That’s the best reason!
MONDAY:

@2wellsmade5…it is black and white striped farfalle {bowtie} pasta. Looks amazing with a simple, bright red tomato sauce {would be great with Jayne’s garlic bread}! I get this dried pasta at Whole Foods but it is also available at Amazon under gourmet foods. It is what we are having for dinner tonight so check out my blog, http://thedinnerconcierge.com tomorrow for pictures & recipes.
Thank you…I’m going to look right now! I am back to a “pescatarian” lifestyle…after eating meats off and on for the last 10yrs, just found it’s really not for me. I go through meatless phases for a year or so, then gotten preggo. Had last baby, so I’m back to vegetarian. I do throw in some shellfish or fish a few times a week. So, I’m again looking for cool new meatless meals! Oh boy, do I love some pasta! Thank you again.

Hi. I would be very interested in your vegetable pot pie filling recipe if you have one and are willing to share. Thanks in advance.
I use the opportunity to clean out my veggie bin. Anything goes!! I use the flour/stock/cream ratio as my guide and am pretty loosey-goosey with the meat/veggies.
Ingredient ratio
1 onion, diced
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2.5 cups chicken stock
1/8 – 1/4 cup heavy cream (or whole milk to be a good girl)
1. Roast protein and vegetables (sweet potatoes, butternut squash, zucchini). Set aside.
2. Sweat onions. Add flour, stir to coat and cook for 2 minutes.
3. Add stock and simmer for several minutes until it thickens.
4. Add cream and stir.
5. Stir in roasted vegetables, any protein, mushrooms, frozen veggies or leafy veggies (i.e. chopped kale/greens/chard/spinach).
6. Season with salt/pepper.
Serving ideas:
1. Traditional Method: Pour filling into a baking dish. Roll out puff pastry sheet over baking dish. Brush with butter and bake in 375-oven until pastry is golden brown (~20 min).
2. Simply spoon over rice/quinoa.
Thanks! It sounds so yummy. I am always looking for ways to use up leftovers, so this is great!
Sun: Friend’s homemade tamales!
Mon: Greek Pasta Salad

Thur: Peanut noodles with tofu (I’m sure the son and I will have our fill of sugary treats at school!)

Hi. I would be very interested in your tomato, chard, chickpea and rice soup recipe if you have one and are willing to share. Thanks in advance.
Link to the recipe: http://a1dente.wordpress.com/2013/02/12/meatless-monday-tomato-chickpea-soup-with-swiss-chard-and-rice/
Tomato-chickpea soup with Swiss chard and rice
5 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 small yellow onion, diced (about 3/4 cup)
6 oz. rainbow chard
2 medium cloves garlic, minced (about 2 tsp.)
1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
Kosher salt
2 cups low-sodium vegetable stock
1 (15.5 oz.) can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup basmati rice
Freshly ground black pepper
Heat 3 tbsp. oil in medium pot over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until onions are translucent and stems are softened, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add tomatoes and sprinkle with salt. Cook 2 minutes, then add stock. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer, and cook until slightly reduced, about 10 minutes. Keep warm.
Meanwhile, heat remaining 2 tbsp. oil in a large sauté pan over high heat until oil is hot and shimmering. Add chickpeas, sprinkle with salt, and fry over medium-high heat until browned and crispy, about 5 minutes. Drain on paper towel, and set aside.
Stir the chickpeas and rice into the soup. Cook five minutes, stirring occasionally. Increase heat to medium-high and stir in the chard, waiting until just wilted and soft before adding more. Simmer 5 to 6 minutes to heat everything through, and then season with salt and pepper.

I tried to put hotlinks in my menu, but obviously failed.
Giant Beans is just a bean dish – no burger : )

I hope you actually see this. Sorry it is not a weekly menu, but a request instead. We moved to San Diego a year ago (and it has been one crazy roller coaster of a year too.) We know there are lots of great restaurants around, but it is hard to know which to try. Please post as many restaurant recommendations as you can. We will be trying Phil’s BBQ for date night this week. I hope it is as good as Pat’s BBQ in SLC. We have missed good BBQ.
yes, of course I see all the comments! it just sometimes takes time to actually respond! 😉
okay, so, it’s been a while since I”ve been in san diego, so I’m CERTAIN I’m missing a lot, but here is an email I sent to a friend a few months ago when they visited san diego – they were looking for a few nice places to eat as well as family-friendly spots. and let me know what you think of phil’s! I’m going to salt lake this week, so maybe I’ll have to go try pat’s!
copied from email to my friend:
san diego…nice restaurant in la jolla called george’s, is so so good…they have fish tacos for an appetizer that are the best we’ve had. they have a patio upstairs that is less expensive than downstairs, but still on the nicer side. jake’s in del mar – predominantly seafood, SO good, again sit down, nice but casual. for fast, cheaper places – Islands Burgers – they are all over san diego, very good place to take kids, super family friendly, good food, awesome cheese fries. wahoo’s fish taco was always a good place to go, I love their carnitas. oh, there’s a fast food restaurant called daphne’s that is greek and it’s super yummy, I miss it terribly. sammy’s woodfired pizza is good, it’s sit down, family friendly. El Indio is a mexican restaurant that everyone always raves about.
Some recommendations for San Diego restaurants:
-Oggi’s, we think their pizza is awesome!
-Burger Lounge, hands down the best turkey burger I’ve ever had!
-Del Mar Rendezvous, my husband and I recently tried this place for Chinese and it was the best Chinese either of us have ever had!
-Devine Pastabilites, they serve all types of pasta in a hollowed out bread roll and it is extremely delicious!
-Sicilian Thing Pizza, they serve both thick and thin crust pizza. My husband loves thin crust and I love thick crust so this place works well for us!
-Mama Testa, awesome Mexican food, it was on Bobby Flay’s Throwdown!
-Miguel’s Cocina, a Mexican food place in Coronado that we really like!
In Little Italy we have tried:
Benecotto’s, it was a great place for a date night, not so kid friendly
Mimmo’s Italian Village, cheaper and more family friendly, also very good!
Great Dessert Places:
Extraordinary Desserts-Beautiful desserts and so tasty! A bit on the pricey side
D Bar-They have an actual menu, but I’ve only had dessert and it was delightful! It’s owned by Keegan Gerheard who is a judge on a lot of the Food Network shows.
*As a side note, I’ve tried El Indio and didn’t think it was all that great!
Hope that’s helpful!
Yay for Pat’s
Monday-Hamburger Noodle Stroganoff
Tuesday-Pizza or Spaghetti w/Red sauce (no meat)
Wednesday-Baked Chicken, mashed potatoes, corn
Thursday-Tuna Steaks, twice baked potatoes, glazed carrots, Cheesecake

Those cookies are pretty! I’ve not been to Phil’s since it left Mission Hills:)
Thank you for all the menu ideas; I’ve been reading your blog for a couple of years but I’m still not this organized yet!

Hi. Meatless meals can be a lot easier than most realize. Egg dishes are always easy (quiches, fritattas, casseroles, etc), as are Mexican dishes (just sub beans for meat) and soups. Jane has some great meatless meals listed on TWFD’s website, and here are a few of my other favorite sites for additional inspiration. Enjoy.

Also, week before last two people asked me for my Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup recipe. Here it is. I’m so sorry it took me so long to post it. It has been a crazy few weeks! Hope you enjoy!
3/4 small head of cabbage sliced thin
1/2 onion diced
2 stalks celery diced
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup of ketchup
2 tbs. red wine vinegar
1/4 tsp hot smoked paprika
1/4 tsp sweet smoked paprika
3/4 lb. ground beef
1 tbs. tomato paste
4 cups of beef broth
1 15oz. can of tomato sauce
salt and pepper to taste
Parmesan cheese rind (this will really flavor the soup)
Directions:
In a dutch oven brown beef and remove to a plate. Saute celery and onions in beef fat (tasty!). Drain fat after celery and onions are browned. Add beef back to pot along with the rest of the ingredients. Let simmer for 1 1/2 hours. When done remove Parmesan cheese rind, ladle into bowls, and serve with crusty bread.

Hi there…just scrolled down and saw your post. Wanted to let you know that I left a reply to your question on my earlier post here regarding the zebra pasta. Zebra pasta is a black & white bowtie pasta {dried}. I get mine at Whole Foods. Looks AMAZING with a simple, bright red tomato sauce. It is what we are having for dinner tonight so check out my blog http://thedinnerconcierge.com for pictures & recipes. Thanks for asking!
There are few things so delicious as Phil’s BBQ — and now there are 2! The brand new one in Santee is a bit bigger than the original….yum! Just in case you can’t get in to the restaurant, you can get Phil’s BBQ Sauce at Costco. No specific days this week – just what works…

Green Chicken Enchiladas
Roasted Salmon with Rice & Broccoli
Baked BBQ Ribs (with Phil’s sauce!) with Roasted Potatoes & Salad
Orecchiete with Brie, Bacon & Asparagus
Lamb Roast with Cilantro Rice & Green Beans
Soup & Sandwich Nite
I bought a bottle of the sauce when we went (to the santee location, btw – so cool they are expanding!)…and then my friend was like, “they have the sauce at costco!” so, apparently, I am going to be in BBQ sauce heaven coming back to SD. 🙂 thanks for the tips!

Slash and Burn Grouper
6 6 oz skin-on black grouper fillets
2 T Jerk Seasoning
1 t olive oil
kosher salt
1/2 c shrimp or shellfish stock
juice of 2 limes
4 T unsalted butter cut into pieces
1 roasted red bell pepper, peeled, seeded, and finely diced
1/2 c fresh cilantro leaves
Preheat oven to 375.
Cut a pocket horizontally through the fish about 2 inches wide and 2 inches deep. Spread about a teaspoon of jerk seasoning in each fillet. Heat an ovenproof sauté pan over medium heat and when it is hot, add the olive oil. Pat the filets dry with a paper towel, season lightly with salt, and lay them in the hot pan. Let the fish brown for 3 minutes and then gently turn them. Place the pan in the oven for 3-5 minutes, until the fish has reached an internal temperature of 140.
Remove the pan from the oven and transfer the fillets to warm plates. Add the stock and lime juice to the pan, bring to a simmer, and reduce by half, 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat and whisk in the butter and then the bell pepper. Pour over the fillets and garnish with the cilantro.
