Well, we finally gave into the trend and tried a cronut this weekend. Our cousins were in town visiting and had heard that a donut shop in Cardiff has great cronuts. The donut shop is called VG Donut & Bakery, a place Nate and I have been wanting to try for months, so we were totally down with the taste test! Cronuts (at least the ones from VG’s) are downright delicious. They remind us of a French cruller, but not quite as eggy. Cronuts are more donut than croissant, but the texture is definitely different than a normal donut, with layers of moist goodness inside a crispy exterior. DELISH!
I can’t believe it’s time to plan another menu. Here goes nothin’!

Jane–I’m just throwing this out there, but when you have your pulled pork sandwiches do you put the coleslaw on the sandwich? If not, you totally have to try it. That’s how it’s done in the south and it’s amazing!
I TOTALLY put it on the sandwich! the first time we had one like that was at Disneyland in the New Orleans section of the park – we were totally hooked and can only eat pulled pork sandwiches that way now! I agree, it is totally amazing!! 🙂
Jane … do you remember which restaurant served pulled pork?
doug, it was the French Market restaurant in New Orleans Square, but they actually changed their menu a year ago and don’t serve the pulled pork anymore!

I fried chicken a few weeks ago and I was very happy with the recipe. You can read more in my blog (http://sundaydinnerfortwo.blogspot.com/2014/03/honey-fried-chicken.html) and if you send me a private e-mail I may be able to slip you a copy of the recipe.

I use Lisa Fain’s recipe and shape the mix into meatballs, it makes a lot but they freeze really well and taste great. Rather then make the glaze I make a tomato and chipotle sauce and serve them with green rice.
Uff, hyperlink fail! That should be Lisa Fain’s tex-mex meatloaf recipe: http://www.thewednesdaychef.com/the_wednesday_chef/2013/04/lisa-fains-tex-mex-meatloaf-with-chipotle-tomato-glaze.html

My only tip for fried chicken, monitor the temperature of your oil :). The first time I made it, my oil was too hot, and my chicken didn’t cook through but was waaay too crispy on the outside ;). Having a deep fryer has made fried chicken much easier around here. Good luck!

I’ve never tried a cronut. Not even sure they sell them here. Not a trendy foodie hub here at all.
Fried chicken- use buttermilk, and soak for awhile. Also fry in smaller batches, don’t over crowd the deep fryer or pan. Use spice in each step of the process, the flour, the dredge, the whole ball of wax. It really helps with flavour. I make it every so often, but used to make huge batches of it for family gatherings and picnics and whatnot. I think I did 50 pounds of fried chicken for our stag n doe. Crazy town. Good oil helps too. xx
your tips are AWESOME. thank you, kim!!!
