Week 415 Weekly Menu and Why Meal Planning is a Great New Year’s Resolution!

Happy New Year! We are home from the east coast and are gearing up for getting back into the groove of real life. Given that it’s January, I’m sure some of you are making new year’s resolutions! Which means it’s time for me to make my annual plug for meal planning! Whether you’ve never planned menus before or just want to be more consistent, meal planning is a great, actionable goal that is quite easy to implement, especially if you decided to post your menu here each week to stay accountable. See? It’s totally the best resolution around. 😉

So, here’s my first menu for 2015! We are starting the week with Grammy’s Orange Chicken. We are really missing her this week and I think orange chicken pretty much has to happen.

Grammy’s Orange Chicken

    Week of January 4 to January 10
    Sunday: “Shortcut” fish tacos and fries
    Monday: Dark bread/smoked salmon, and ham/bean soup
    Tuesday: Mushroom-barley soup, homemade croutons, provolone
    Wednesday: Moroccan pasta
    Thursday: Stuffed peppers – ground lamb, beans, rice
    Friday: Baked ravioli
    Saturday: Lamb stew

    Cold and flu season is in full swing here (not in my house yet, knock on wood!) but I’m making a preventative menu this week, lots of broth, and immune boosters!

    Sat — tortelloni spinach soup
    Sun — roast chicken, risotto, salad
    Monday — chicken burritos (freezer mystery rice), fries
    Tuesday — lemon orzo chicken soup, fresh bread
    Wed — homemade pizza
    Thurs — butternut squash soup, Apple & cheddar paninis
    Fri — eggs, homefries, toast

  3. Monday: sweet potato chorizo chile mac
    Tuesday: southwest veggie & taco rice bake – recipe coming friday!
    Wednesday: leftovers
    Thursday: frittata & roasted potatoes
    Friday: out to eat
    Saturday: minestrone soup in the crockpot
    Sunday: roasted chicken

  5. Happy New Year, everyone! Today was the first big snow of the year in Chicago….and our first snow since we moved up north. The kids had a BLAST shoveling/playing/sledding. Lunch was a game day decision of tomato soup (a riff on Jane’s recipe to suit our family’s taste) and grilled cheeses. It gave enough energy for Round 2 outside this afternoon.

    Sunday: General Tso’s Chicken with rice and roasted broccoli

    Monday: Pulled pork sandwiches

    Tuesday: Homemade pasta and meatballs

    Wednesday: Creamy potato soup (a callback from last week)

    Thursday: Pulled pork fried rice

    Friday: Leftovers 

    Saturday: Out

    We are just getting back into town as well and I had enough ingredients in my mostly empty cupboards to make a casserole tonight. Otherwise… I have no idea what’s cooking at my house this week! Thank goodness I can come here for inspiration. 😉

    This year I’m trying to do more slow cooker meals so I have more time with my kids…seems like I’m always prepping or cooking or cleaning…

    I’m not sure how much meal planning I’ll be doing this year; our first baby is due in two and a half weeks! Provided she stays put for a few more days here’s this week’s plan.

    Mon: Cauliflower cheese quiche, salad
    Tue: Chilli cobbler
    Wed: Pasta with broccoli, garlic and chilli
    Thur: Tomato and spinach risotto
    Fri: Chicken club wraps, potato wedges
    Sat: Arancini and salad
    Sun: Dinner at Mum’s

    I am sitting at work wondering how i got here. going back to work after vacation is just the worst ! well there goes my resolution to be more positive 🙂

  21. Wow! So glad I found this blog! Great recipes and I agree, meal planning is great and should be a goal for everyone this year. This makes it easy during the week to know what is for dinner and also eliminates any uncertainty of what lunch will be too. Lunch can be a tempting meal because we often go out to lunch while at work. If you mea plan you can avoid the unwanted calories and save hundreds of dollars a month! Great advice, thank you!
