Free Giveaway! Chicken Salad Secret Ingredient

Update: Onera is out of business as far as I can tell. So, this post is basically useless! 🙂

Here is the story behind the chicken salad…Meier’s Meats in SLC, UT has the best chicken salad. My family would order it for parties, etc, etc. Well, one day my Aunt Barb found out the “secret” ingredient that made this chicken salad so good was sitting under our noses the whole time, right there on the butcher’s counter!

Onera Original Seasoning. The “secret” ingredient wasn’t so secret at all. Perfect in chicken salad but also as a seasoning on all kinds of stuff, including homemade french fries.

If you live in Utah, it’s easy to get – they sell it at “The Store” (of which there are a few locations). A woman at “The Store” said they also sell it at Harmon’s, Smith’s, etc. It’s located back by the butcher.

If you are like most of us non-Utah people, you have to order it online. One of my awesome readers (thanks working gal!) found a website for Onera Blended Spices. Onera recently changed ownership, which is why the labels look different.

There is ONE more way to get your hands on a bottle…reply with a comment, any comment, to this post for the first ever TWFD giveaway! Good luck! (One winner will be randomly selected…must post your comment by 8:00 AM PST, Sunday May 27)

I have seen this in recipes and things before but I’ve never tried it. Sign me up!

  9. 9

Funny how one secret ingredient changes a whole basic recipe. I worked at a hotel and the chef swore by putting a little worcestershire sauce in his chicken salad. It was pretty good, too!

I am a little confused as to why I lived in Utah, and Matt is from Utah and I am not aware of this secret ingredient. I’m hoping to win the give-away, but if not, I’m going to Salt Lake in a couple weeks and I might just have to pick it up. 🙂 You have such awesome tips! Thanks, Jane!

  17. 17

amy from utah…the only “The Store” that I’ve been to is on 2050 E 6200 S. I think there are a few others (maybe murray and holladay?)…it is a cool grocery store – smaller, cool stuff, good butcher, yummy prepared foods…you should check it out!

Onera has been in my family for over 30 yrs! not sure where my uncles got it but I used to call a number in Salt Lake City and ordered it from a little old man, he was so nice. Then the number was disconnected and my letters were returned. I did find the website but I don’t see where you can order it anymore. I would love to win a bottle as I have NONE left. I love the stuff and can’t find anything that compairs.

    • Jane Maynard

sadly, I think they must be out of business! that link is not linking to their site anymore…and the domain is for sale. I know it had been purchased by new owners about when I wrote this post originally, because the company wasn’t doing very well…looks like they didn’t pull through. SO BUMMED! I’ll need to enjoy my last bottle thoroughly!!!

  42. 42

I realize that this post is old, but it still comes up in online web searches for “Onera seasoning.” I’m just commenting because the website that everyone referred to above must have changed. The link now takes you to some Japanese website that, when translated (using Google), talks about B00BS. I’m pretty sure that’s not where you intended to direct people. So, you may want to go back and delete the links – if you still can. Thanks.

Yes, I’ve also been trying to find Onera Original from Salt Lake City!! We go back there every couple of years to see family and always stock up, with about 20 bottles. We are out and am desperate to find more!! My whole family will be sad if we can’t get it anymore!!

    • Jane Maynard

my aunt had some bottles in her pantry when I visited her last winter – I was so tempted to steal some! 😉

I am one of the individuals who helped created the chicken salad at Meiers. There are a lot of other ingredients in our chicken salad. You can buy onera at Meiers Meats And Fine Foods in Highland Utah and at The Store in Holladay Utah.

My wife’s grandmother’s fourth husband is the maker of Onera Seasoning, There is more than just original flavor, he told me the warehouses for the grocers only stock original because that is the most popular one,but he is going to try to change that

ONERA Is not out of business, I am a member of the family, I just bought a bottle today from a grocery store that is locally owned and operated

  47. I been using ONERA for years for my wings, but I can’y find the CAJAN flover any where, do you have any ideawhere I can get it?

    • unfortunately I don’t think I can be much help! Onera has changed ownership a few times over the years and is constantly available and then unavailable. I’ve researched online and can’t find any info. so sorry!
