iPhone Tip Follow-Up

Remember the iPhone tip about apps running in the backgroundΒ that I shared a few weeks ago? Well….I have an update that I need to share with you today! (If you don’t know what I’m talking about, click here to get the scoop.)

My friend’s boyfriend is an actual iPhone engineer at Apple. They were talking about this and he has some updated and important information for us. Apparently when iPhone apps are running in the background, they are not eating up battery life or processing power. Well, they can be…if it’s an app that is actually doing something, like tracking GPS, then it could be using up some power, but otherwise, the apps are not killing your iPhone’s life and speed.

In my defense, our Apple engineer friend said that Genius bar employees are one of the reasons that this myth is being perpetuated…and I did do research online before writing my original post. Every source said that open apps use up battery and processing power. I blame the so called geniuses for all this confusion!

Regardless of this new information that has come to light, I am still DELIGHTED that I learned the trick. Now that I know how to pull up open apps (just double click the home button), I use it ALL THE TIME. I tend to close apps that that I don’t use often. And the ones I use frequently I leave running. It really is so much faster to double click the home button to pull up whatever is open and get to the apps from there. I love it!

So what originally was something I thought bugged me turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the iPhone. Of course. Should I have ever have doubted Steve Jobs and my friend’s boyfriend? No! πŸ™‚

  1. I have becom a true evangelist of the double-click home button trick, and show it to everyone I know who has an iPhone. Although I love your recipes, menus, and food tips and tricks, I must say it probably is the best thing I’ve ever discovered on TWFD! BTW, I quit my job and found a 20-hour per week, exclusively working-from-home copyediting position! Our lives are so much better!! πŸ™‚

I was having problems with my new iphone about a month ago and called their customer care #. The agent told me that running apps in the background can slow down or even stop your internet connection. So either it really is true or even the folks at Apple are confused!

  3. 3

My friend who is a software engineer for Apple and actually works on the development and design of the iphone told me specifically that the genius bar people are giving customers false information. The double clicking of the home button is showing you a record of what you have had opened or using last, it doesn’t mean that it is currently running or eating up battery life. Some where along the lines, the apple genius bar peeps have been mis-trained!
When I found out this whole thing about closing up everything, it made absolutely no difference in my battery life, but I did feel like I was accomplishing something and somehow helping my phone:)
