Week 299 Menu

The season that makes me most homesick for the Northeast is autumn. I seriously miss a good, old-fashioned fall, complete with colorful leaves, cool weather and apple picking. I have the best mother-in-law ever. She proved herself once again this week by sending a box filled with Macintosh apples and fall leaves. It was so thoughtful and cute of her. There is nothing like a Macintosh grown in New England.

Menu time!

– Homemade pizza

– A little shout out for World Food Day! The non-profit ONE will be hosting events in six cities (click to see if one of them is yours) and calling on everyone to send messages to leaders to put hunger on the agenda. Good stuff! Click here to read more! I’ll have to miss the San Francisco event because I’ll be at a field trip with my little Anna, but if you make it, have fun for me!
– Something with sweet potatoes!

– Fajitas (didn’t get to that last week)

– Eat out after soccer practice

– Leftovers for the family
– I will be attending the DailyBuzz Food Festival and eating dinner at B44 in San Francisco

– Scrounge something up for the kids…Nate and I will be at the DailyBuzz Food gala at the Academy of Sciences

– Breakfast for dinner! Details TBD…

As usual, it is time for me to BEG you to post your menu for the week! Please, pretty please! We honestly don’t care how fancy or un-fancy the menu is…everything inspires ideas!

do you have a recipe for the tartiflette? I didn’t know what it was and looked it up and it sounds yummy!

    • Hi Jane, here’s the recipe. It’s really tasty but a bit of a naughty treat! I got this recipe when I was living in the Haute Savoie so it should be pretty authentic. If you can’t get Reblochon cheese in the US I think Taleggio would be a good substitute. I’ve also made a nice (but very different) version using goat’s cheese.

Slice 1kg (2lb) potatoes (about 5mm, 1/4 inch thick) and boil until soft. Layer half the potato in a buttered dish.

Fry 175g (6oz) bacon pieces and a large sliced onion until golden then scatter over the potato. Season with black pepper and top with the remaining potato.

Deglaze the frying pan with 250ml (1 cup) white wine and let it bubble for a few minutes. Stir in 250ml (1 cup) creme fraiche and a pinch of salt then pour over the potatoes.

Cover the top of the potatoes with thick slices of Reblochon (about 250g, 1/2lb).

Bake at 180C (350F) for 30-40 minutes until golden and bubbly.

      Serves 4-6

    • Jane Maynard

After being a single parent for almost the entire year… (my husband is in the military) I am rather unmotivated to cook anything for my kids. I **hate** spending the time to cook when my kids just look at their plate and go, “I don’t want it”…
