Things I Love Thursday

How’s that for a cute title that makes this post sound totally legit even though it really means I don’t have anything to write about because we’ve only eaten boxed macaroni and cheese (at least it was organic!) and rachel sandwiches all week. Well, actually, I DID cook on Monday, but apparently one good meal in a week is still all I’ve got in me.

Okay, so a few things I love today.

1. Cleaning leeks.
Yes, I LOVE cleaning leeks. Cutting them open and washing out that black dirt is just so, I don’t know, satisfying.

2. Fred’s Steak. Go on, tell me that meat ain’t gorgeous. I dare ya.
A few weeks ago I was craving steak. I needed it desperately. So I turned to one of our favorites, Fred’s Steak, which I’ve written about before. For the LOVE, this stuff is good. And, wouldn’t you know, once I had this, my craving was gone. Thank you, Shaub’s, for helping a poor pregnant lady out.

3. Jake Gyllenhall. I’m resisting the urge to say “Go on, tell me THAT meat ain’t gorgeous” but I don’t want to objectify Β poor, innocent Mr. Gyllenhaal.
Don’t worry, Nate knows I’m in love. In fact, he recorded Jimmy Kimmel for me last night because Jake (yes, we’re on a first name basis) was on the show. What a good husband – Nate, not Jake. Anyway, I already love Jake for being so darn cute and funny…but then I learn from last night’s interview that he loves food. I think I know a food blog you might like, Jake. Oh, and he works with Edible Schoolyard, founded by Alice Waters. Be still my beating heart.

  1. I enjoy cleaning leeks too! They are so beautiful πŸ™‚

  2. I love those leeks! I have to laugh because last year was the first time I’d ever tried leeks, and I had to wonder where they’d been all my life πŸ™‚

alysa – they ARE so beautiful – I want to photograph them every time we have them! πŸ™‚

jo jo – they really are a great veggie, huh? I love them in soups – more than onions – and actually, one time I made a rachael ray mashed potato recipe that had bacon, leeks and tomatoes mixed in that was very tasty!

I have a funny, true story about Jake G. Just before Xmas, we went to Sloan Kettering Cancer Hospital in NYC with my daughter who is being treated there weekly. It was our first visit and after being at a different hospital for 8 months, I was really nervous/puzzled/uncertain of what to expect. They have a giant playroom and guess who was there? Jake G! He was there, signing autographs, sitting on the floor to get closer to the little kids hooked up to IV machines having chemo treatment. He had no entourage with him and no press agents. He was laughing and talking to the kids and all the nurses were swooning! This was Christmas Christmas Eve. He will always get points in my book for doing that without any fuss. And he’s a big (tall) guy. The kids looked so small beside him – I guess that’s why he was sitting on the floor with them.

that is so sweet. thanks for sharing! (of course we’re all going to love him more, now! πŸ˜‰ )

most importantly…I hope you’re daughter is doing well – love and prayers to her!

What cut of meat do they use for the “black meat”?

    • Jane Maynard

it’s marinated sirloin…you just bake it and it’s perfection – so tender and so flavorful. there’s a link in the original post that I link to that has a recipe for what they think the marinade is. haven’t tried it, maybe when we move away from this area I’ll have to!

  8. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has weeks like this! that steak DOES look gorgeous!

My husband has spotted JG on the subway, but I have not had that same fortune. One day…one day.

  9. We can agree to disagree about the steak. I’ve never met a steak I liked. But Jake, yes, well.

  10. It’s refreshing to read a food blogger admit that not every night can be a culinary masterpiece! You pulled it off with grace and wit; looking forward to reading more.

  11. very cool this post. you know any restaurant or exotic foods of the Amazon – Brazil. see the photos on my blog
